Probate and council Tax
can anyone advise what I need to do. My mum has passed away and her house has now gone through probate and the 6 months grace period. The house is unoccupied and shall continue to be until sold. I currently receive UC, PIP, Housing and reduction in council tax. Until the property is sold the council now want me to pay the full council tax on it? Is this correct? I simply cannot afford to.

Hi @Katrina65. I'm so sorry to hear of your mum passing away. Are you receiving enough support?
This isn't something I'm familiar with I'm afraid, but I did find some information about second homes which might be relevant, but I'm not completely sure:
You may not have to pay the premium for up to 12 months if:
- you recently received a grant of probate (or letters of administration) for the second home
- the second home is being marketed for sale or to rent
You will still need to pay the standard rate of council tax on the property, unless you’re eligible for a discount or exemption.
To apply for an exception, contact your council.
I would suggest speaking again to the council to clarify or you can contact Citizens Advice who may know more.
