I received my award letter nearly 3 weeks ago and it does not state a back payment on the letter just my 4 weekly payments. Has anyone ever had it taken this long for a back payment?

Was this a new application, or an award from a review?

In that case I would give them a call & ask about backpay.

I will depend on many things, the qualifying period and a decision was made within that etc. Usually they will call to ask if you're okay managing a lump sum going into your account, give the PIP enquiry line a call. They don't usually put backdated amounts on PIP award letters.

OP made a new claim for PIP so it will backdate to the date they applied. The date of the decision is irrelevant and there is no "qualifying period".

So after many phone calls it turns out my case worker made a mistake and is now changing my pip date to the date I phoned them and have been told to wait 3-5 days for my back payment and I will get another letter explaining all this. Thank you for your advice and I'm so glad di rang them.
