What were your favourite school dinners?

I was having this conversation with my housemate at lunch time so I thought I'd ask you lot too! I don't remember much about the mains I had, just lots of cubed vegetables and mashed potato. But I definitely remember the puddings!

Chocolate concrete with custard was a favourite. And cornflake or treacle tart with custard. Or just a good slice of plain school cake… with custard. Custard was a theme in my school and came in many different colours. Although turns out after some research it was usually just watered down blancmange!

Did you have school dinners? What were your favourite dishes or puddings?

Back in the day (as they say), the best school dinners were SQUARE Pizzas (eh?), going back even further to juniors, they had Fish Fingers most days which was good, although one particular day I remember they advertised Fish Fingers and it ended up being Mushy Peas! Yuck!

Yes, I remember the square pizzas @SheffieldMan1976! We often had fish fingers too, sometimes served with potato smiley faces and baked beans or peas.

Swapping fish fingers for mushy peas doesn't sound like a fair swap at all!

I don’t remember anything except the square pizza and chips oh and mixing the jam rolly poly up in the custard to make pink custard and getting told off by the dinner lady for messing with my food.

They served a chicken and veg pie that was so hearty. Puddings were.. rice pudding with a blob of jam or semolina with a sprinkle of brown sugar. Secondary school.. the chips were delicious… could not afford much else.

Yeah I used to have to in the junior years because they didn't have the staff to have me on site back then.

Fortunately we only lived about a 10 minute walk away.

I often used to have a sandwich, and they'd charge about 2 and half quid for a tiny Breadcake with a dob of Butter.

Square pizza @SheffieldMan1976 and @PracticeWotUPreach! 😯 Do either of you have a picture?!

Curly fries and pizza used to be good at my old school. And they had cookies which were just the right amount of undercooked. Not exactly the cornerstone of a healthy diet but delicious all the same 😅

haha no unfortunately, but think of the pizzas from Greggs — it was basically half of that, just a plain margarita square but the base was thicker.

I never had school dinners. Far too fussy. Didn't like anything soft or anything with any type of sauce or colour or flavour. And I couldn't stand the smell of the dinner hall! 😄

Had packed lunch with the classic white bread sandwich, crisps and biscuit bar.

Semolina doesn't sound very nice @onmylonesome!! I've never tried it but it doesn't sound appetizing!

I used to really enjoy the crumble and custard at primary school and then in secondary school we used to have Pasta King which was pretty much always 80% water and 20% sauce🤣

A red corrugated cup filled with fusilli pasta, topped with a thick, chunky tomato sauce and slices of sausage. The cup features the "Pasta King" logo and sits on a light wooden table. In the background, fresh cherry tomatoes on the vine and green basil leaves are visible, with red pepper flakes scattered around the base of the cup.

I love Semolina … still buy it now. I used to love Tapioca (frog spawn 😁) too

School pudding favourites for me was chocolate crunch cake with chocolate custard, or jam and coconut sponge. My wife still makes both for me.

Anyone else remember the metallic water jugs ? Or the small bottles/ cartons of milk … until Maggie Milk Snatcher came along 😏

I loved my schools version of cheese and onion quiche which had a lovely buttery pastry with a side of chips and salad cream.

I also loved the schools homemade strawberry suet sponge/or spotted dick with hot custard, "school cake" with white or pink hot custard, and the lemon tart with the crumbliest pastry with a side of ice cream or custard 😜
