Fit to Work and Reasonable Adjustments on Placement: Speech and Language Therapy
For anyone will to read this long topic and contribute to the discussion. Thank you in advance
I am unable to find information regarding studying at uni and what reasonable adjustments can be requested while on placement. I am classed as unfit to work through DWP, but am still allowed to do my studies. However, the course requires a fitness to work assessment and the HCPC Conduct and Ethics for Students alongside other health profession policies are too difficult to comprehend for an individual case such as myself.
It states "The standards also apply to people who are applying to become registered with us"
"On your programme you will be expected to meet high standards of conduct and ethics. You should be aware that in very serious circumstances, your conduct may affect your ability to:– complete your programme;– gain the final qualification; or– register with us3."
For me, the concern is regarding Section 6 'Managing Risks'
– You should be aware that you may put your service users or yourself at risk if your performance or judgement is affected by your physical or mental health.
– You should seek appropriate support and adapt your study or stop studying if your performance or judgement is affected by your physical or mental health and could put service users, yourself or others at risk.
– You should get advice from a doctor, or other appropriate professional, if you are worried about your physical or mental health.
It feels as though there is a grey area regarding reasonable adjustments for mental health and ADHD in profession of Speech and Language Therapy.
I do not feel universities provide education and knowledge of this to lecturers or placement supervisors who need training to do that specific role for students.
I myself am also still trying to understand what my strengths and areas of difficulty are for the role I am wanting to qualify in.
I have experienced discrimination before, and do not feel I have the autonomy to plan my resit of my placement. I was unable to complete it initially due to the burden of being misunderstood, causing significant impact on my wellbeing and mental health resulting in me being unfit to practice.
I refuse to let this happen again and would like to be able to go back to working part time in the future.
Any constructive advise would be greatly appreciated.
