Hi I have multiple heart and arthritis problems all over my body . I live alone but a friend I know has nowhere to live but he asked to stay in my spare room. I know I will have to pay council tax I will not get single person discount. But I'm on long term sick and pip I'm on 11 medications. I want to help him out but will it effect my own sick benefits and pip. Will they say you have other money coming in the house now even though he's just a friend will they say oh you have help now so I won't get as many points on my next assessment. What is the situation can any one help please. Thank you

Hi @Mumbles111 it might have an impact on any means tested benefits but ESA and PIP should be ok. Are you presently claiming housing benefits? If so, it's worth just running it past your local council.

    Hi,

Can you confirm which type of ESA you get? And whether you get any Universal Credit?

If you are still on the old style Income Based ESA, that could be affected by any rent that your friend pays. This is one of very few things that are better on UC, because UC does not class rental income from a lodger as earnings.
