It's definitely tough @sben, there are lots of issues that disabled people face that can put up huge barriers to work and just living your life in general.

How are you doing at the moment? Are you struggling with any of the things that you wrote about here?

EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW AND LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF DISABILITIES.
EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW AND LEARN ABOUT FIRST AID.
EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW AND LEARN HOW DISABILITIES AFFECTS PEOPLE.
EMPLOYERS NEED TO HAVE ADAPTATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
I AM UNABLE TO WORK, BECAUSE OF MY HEALTH AND DISABILITIES.
I HAVE EPILEPSY, IN WHICH I CONSTANTLY HAVE UNCONSCIOUS SEIZURES AND PHYSICAL FITS.
I ALSO HAVE A GAIT DISORDER, IN WHICH I HAVE MOBILITY PROBLEMS.
BOTH OF MY HEALTH AND DISABILITIES PUTS MY HEALTH AND SAFETY AT RISK.

    I

I am not working at the moment, because of my health and disabilities, but I have noticed what the government and DWP are doing to people with different types of health and disabilities.

It feels like we are not listened to, and we are always ignored.

I think a lot of people are feeling that way too @sben, you're definitely not alone in that. It can be really stressful relying on the benefits system, and they don't make it easy to claim sometimes.

What kind of changes would make you feel less ignored by the DWP?

The changes that would make me feel less ignored by the DWP is how different types of disabilities truly affects different types of people.

The DWP should imagine themselves having disabilities, how they would cope, being able and unable to do certain things, maybe needing to pay for care and equipment, because of having different types of disabilities, and remembering that some people might have more than one type of disabilities.

Why should disabled people be employed if they are not the best person for the job?

Why should the employer be expected to pay additional money for their needs instead of hiring an able bodied person?

As a disabled person myself, I have been severely impacted repeatedly by people who cannot do their jobs correctly. I sincerely hope this isn't due to any requirement to hire disabled people and make excuses for them!

Because disability discrimination was made illegal under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and then 15 years later, the Equality Act 2010, but I am painfully aware it still happens because there's loopholes in the law where they can discriminate without actually saying they're discriminating.

Yes, sadly that is true. Many laws have contributed to the decline of my health and abilities in recent years. Morally wrong in my opinion, but my opinion means nothing against legislation.

What gets me though , is that the Labour government are trying to force ALL disabled people into some form of work, I've been there, I've done most of the courses, there are NO jobs that will willingly take on the disabled because that "reasonable adjustments" **** costs them money.

The government and DWP are forcing people with disabilities to work.

The government and DWP are making in very hard for people to claim benefits.

    I, myself have lost everything.

The government are currently asking claimants if they would like support to get into work, it's not compulsory, so if you feel you're unable to please don't feel pressured.

I replied to you on another discussion and asked what support you need? Then we can try and help you.

    I have lost everything.

PIP does not believe anything that I say, and they always ignore everything that I say.

    Citizens Advice are no help.

Because of this, I am unable to get on with my daily life, because of my disabilities, I am unable to feel safe, both at home and in public, I am unable to do things for myself, and I am unable to get the care that I need.

Which is wrong on several levels, I've lived with and met a myriad of severely mentally and/or physically handicapped people, including most of the residents here, who could no more go out and work than I could fly around saving people dressed as a Superhero.

Have you considered looking at public sector jobs? While private sector employers are required to comply with the Equality Act 2010, and make reasonable adjustments it's often impossible to get through the door in the first place. The public sector, (this includes schools, local council, central government, etc) have an additional duty placed on them by the Public Sector Equality Duty(PSED), to ensure accessibility (for the public and employees). This includes reasonable adjustments during recruitment and guaranteed interviews (where the minimum threshold is met). Civil service job recruitment panels, do not see which scheme you've applied under (disability, ex-military, or re-deployment).

Now, I'm not saying that one you successfully obtain employment in the civil service, that you are magically given the adjustments you need (there is still a long way to go with educating a lot of managers), but there is definitely much more support and awareness.

Sadly, there are some DWP work coaches, who are far more interested in getting people into any job, rather than providing the support to help them find meaningful, rewarding roles that individual wants to do.

I once applied to Sheffield City Council to be a Lollipop Man, er, "School Crossing Attendant", I filled in all the paper work online, they turned round and said I hadn't declared my disability for a guaranteed interview, I wouldn't mind but even if I had I probably wouldn't have got the job anyway because of the hours.

    Dear Mary,

Every time I try to apply for PIP, they never believe anything that I say, and they always ignore me.

I have been to Citizens Advice many times, but Citizens Advice has not helped.

Because of this, I am unable to pay for adult social care, for my health and safety, as I always have different types of seizures, I have mobility problems, and I always have dizzy spells.
