Hi there

I've recently separated from my partner and had to leave our home because living together was unbearable. I want to rent in Wales but staying with family in england. finding it really hard to speak to citizens advice or housing in england or Wales to find out what to do. Stuck in a catch 22 at moment as I'm also unemployed and haven't worked in 8yrs. need to work but have to have somewhere to live first but feels like an impossible task right now.

Any advice, or suggestions welcome.

Thanks you

j

    Hi,

The sad reality is that social housing is in very short supply.

Councils and Housing Associations will usually need you to have a connection to the area in order to bid on their properties.

I'm unsure whether you have lived in Wales and are temporarily back in England, or whether you would just prefer to live in Wales? That will have an impact on which housing services you can access.

If you don't have a connection to Wales then the best advice I can offer is to contact the Council or Housing Association in the area you currently live in to get on their books asap. You can always move to a different location in future using a 'housing swap'.

I assume you are currently getting Universal Credit? If so, you can just make a change of circumstances on there if & when you move into a property. They will add the Housing Element to your claim.

you need to submit a homeless application to the council you're in now, or the place you just left, and fight for them to accept duty.

Without the council's help, nobody will rent to you because you're unemployed. Doubly so if you lack a guarantor.
