I was told to email about wanting my sertaline higher dose and my mental health getting worse. And was emailed back saying not to email and a link to talking therapies. Most are online which I hate doing, zoom etc. Are they any good

Hi Andi. Good for you for reaching out in crisis. That takes a lot of guts for many of us. Maybe you could post the link so we can comment?

hi, it can be hit and miss but then it can when its face-to-face as well. For me, its all about how I can connect with the therapist and I got really lucky with Talking Therapies last time I was with them. I had phone calls the 1st time and then it was in person 12 months later. I was allowed to ask for the same therapist.

I'd encourage you to give it a go. As hard as it can be, anything is worth trying if there is a chance of it helping you feel better

    good luck x

Hi @Andi66 sorry that your mental health is getting worse at the moment. Was it your GP who previously prescribed sertraline? Is it possible to request an appointment to discuss this if you don't feel that you've had an opportunity to talk through the increase and how you're feeling, or really discuss the talking therapy options from the email? I'm prescribed sertraline and have done talking therapy, both had their benefits.

Hi @Andi66 I have had talking therapy the first time phone calls and second time face-to-face.

If I had not had the phone calls first I would probably not have done it. I am quite a private person and hate talking about myself. It can also bring out things we have buried and would prefer to leave there.

Did it help me, not at first but by the end of the second one I did start to feel a bit better. I did have the same therapist both times.

I would suggest you give it a go and see if it can help you.

    Take care.

So talking therapies is a specific service of therapists offered by the NHS?

You can Google talking therapies which would be under your health authority

I don't live in the UK. So am not sure what you're talking about.

Hi @StarryEyed this link might help if you can access - Talking therapies - NHS 😊

Some charities offer a number of sessions too. I was granted mine via a local charity.

    Hi @Holly,

I avoid Talking Therapies, especially using a phone. Due to my Auditory Processing Disorder i have problems processing and understanding what I hear, especially when i am not able to use my visual coping strategies lip reading, and reading body language.

When I had to do my PIPs Tribunal Appeal online using Zoom due to Covid, i told the Judge that I had the sound turned off, and that we need to communicate typing in the ChatBox. I won the appeal.

Thanks for sharing this @dolfrog and pleased they were supportive of your needs during the tribunal. Thinking out loud, I wonder if there are any therapies that are tailored to APD - perhaps something written like you found with the tribunal. I wonder how many other people are missing out on support if they need it if not.

    Hi Holly_Scope

The required support/therapy depends on the alternative compensating cognitve skills and abilties an individual can develop based on their cognitive strenghts, such as Visual and Kinesthetic skills to work around our lifelong auditory limitations. So it is about working out how each individual who has the Temporal type of APD is best able to work around their Auditory limitations

Thanks @dolfrog, appreciate you taking the time to explain this. 🙂

Thank you. What an interesting setup through the NHS, especially that you can do a self-referral outside the medical and psychiatric system. I've never heard of such a system in other countries.
