My son in Sept 2025 started Btec Level 2 Business Studies and repeated Science GCSE in college. His last exam is 15th June 2026. The same college has given him conditional offer to study A levels in Sept 2026.

Today i received a message in journal telling me that his element will end in june as the Btec was 1 year course if its wrong put down the new course end date. I have replied and put change of circumstance and added two more years for course completion.

Will UC child element not be paid for next 3 months since new course starts in sept 2026?

Very confused.

They asked when did change happen and i put todays date, i also put down start date as 8th sept 2026 and finishes on june 20th 2028.

So payments shouldnt stop? Current course ends 15th june 2026.

Hi, just some advice please, its been 3 weeks and still my child hasnt been verified how long does it take?

My monthly assessment period ends on 5th july, if its not done by then it will take time to get back payments?

Is this normal to take this long?

@yellowamber, what makes you think they haven't been verified? Sometimes you won't receive a notification of this, it'll just be that they are on your statement.

If they are not on your statement or haven't been verified after 5th July, you can ask for it to be escalated once your payment date has passed.

Many thanks for replying, on the journal the lady stated she has escalated the matter. Hopefully it is done soon now.

Hi, Been 4 weeks now and UC still hasnt verified my child for staying further at college. Child benefits updated a few weeks ago but UC on the journal says there is no timelimit to verify.

Is there anything i can do? last week they said they would escalate it but nothings been done.

Today i received message on journal, has anyone come across this?

    "Your child has been verified

You do not need to do anything else. You will only receive payments for this child if you are entitled to receive them."

How do i find this out if im entitled? Also it doesnt mention anything about backpay...

    UC are making everything difficult.

You will find out on your next payment statement if you are entitled.

Backpay is dealt with seperately to your monthly payment and this usually takes several weeks at least.

You'll know when this has been done as a letter will be added to your Journal stating either a refusal to backdate, or stating the amount owed due to underpayment. The money will be paid within a few working days and new versions of your statements added.

If you are refused backpay, this can be challenged.
