Can humans use it? Asking for a friend, honest 😅

It's so warm here, honestly. I'm close to trying anything at this point!

That's a great idea - my best friend used to swear by that when she worked abroad!

I'd kill for some Aloe Vera now. The Carbamazepine I take, make you very photosensitive … Mr. I Don't Need Sunscreen is now Mr. I Wish I'd Listened and Mr. Should Have Learnt From Last Time rolled into one 🙄 And very red and sore

On that note, anyone taking Anti Rejection meds … there's a much greater risk of skin cancer on them. So anyone please be careful and safe

Wash or soak your feet in cool water 🥰

Aloe Vera is amazing stuff, especially for sunburnt skin, but generally it's very cooling and soothing……😉

Get an aloe vera plant @WelshBlue! We have one and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger 😅 Whenever we have a burn or something, my husband loves to cut off a leaf and heal me.

I started prepping some "keep your home cool" tips last month but it was miserable at the time so I didn't share them. Thought I'd bolt them onto here - hope that's ok @Rachel_Scope. I think I've removed anything you've covered ☺️

    Windows

In the morning/evening it’s a good idea to open windows at opposite ends of your home as it encourages airflow. If that’s not possible, you could open internal doors or use a fan to help with air circulation. If you’ve got vents, windows or a skylight in your loft, open these. Heat rises and it can encourage that warm air out.

    Reflective window film

Is a cheap and effective way to keep your home cool by deflecting the suns rays. It can reduce heat and glare by up to 99%. Youdon’tneed to have these fitted professionally either – it’s a fairly easy DIY task.

    Using a fan?

If you’re using a fan, pop a deep bowl of ice in front of it to increase the chill.

In the evening you could point a little fan towards an open window to help remove the warm air from your room.

    Air conditioning/Dehumidifiers

Air conditioning units are more effective than a fan, but also quite a lot more expensive.

Dehumidifiers can help by pulling moisture out of the air, helping your skin to breathe.

    The Extractor Fan’s hidden use

During warmer weathers, if you keep internal doors open and leave bathroom/kitchen fans running a little while, it helps remove that warm air. Make sure to open windows and vents though to allow fresh, cooler air to enter your home. And don’t forget to close those internal doors after so the warm air doesn’t creep back into your cooler rooms again.

    Lights

When safe to do so, having lights off in the day can help to keep your home temperatures cooler.

    Bedding

Use natural fibre bedding like linen or cotton and opt for a lightweight summer duvet.

    Keeping your body cool

    Showering

Opt for a cooler shower in warmer temperatures (this’ll also save you some pennies on your energy bills). Just don’t make it too cold, otherwise it can trap heat in your body by reducing blood flow to the skin.

    Dressing

Choose loose and lightweight clothes made of natural materials like linen. These can help regulate your temperature and loose fitting will help it move in a breeze, giving you an extra cooling experience!

    Wrists and Feet

During the day, you can use an icepack, cold cloth or chilled hot water bottle on these areas for an immediate cold hit. Make sure you wrap these items though, to avoid ice burns.

I tried a frozen hot water bottle last night and it definitely helped!

Don't go into the attic … I've just spent 45 minutes in there.

Oh my life I never knew it was possible to sweat so much and not dissolve 😥

As well as keeping all drinks in the fridge, I'll pop in a few drinking glasses too.

It gives you something cold to hold against your skin while drinking, gives the cold drink level a boost & I think keeps the drink cool longer while out.

In my area the heatwave has been intense & prolonged and a record has been set today 🥵

I have actually gone nuclear today and booked into a local hotel with air con for the night.

After dental surgery yesterday I couldn't face another day in my flat (26 when I left) which isn't cooling at all overnight.

I'm ground floor & can only open my 4 small bedroom top windows a little, otherwise my neighbours cat lets herself in (I'm one of her homes 😻) then due to layout can't get herself out again. She somehow squeezed in a few nights ago but thankfully I hadn't gone to sleep 🤣

That sounds amazing @Kimi87, how are you feeling after your dental surgery? Hopefully you'll be able get some proper restful sleep tonight!

You're very brave doing that in the middle of the heatwave @WelshBlue!!! Did you find anything exciting up there?

@Mary_Scope … brave or very silly ? It was a case of needing to get up there

Nothing exciting … but got a lot of fibreglass sticking to me due to perspiration Luckily I'm having a cool bath or else a hot one would open up the pores and it would be a night of heat and itching 😫

Thank you to everyone for these tips - they have helped enormously!

Rotating moist towels in the fridge is a great idea (I can't find who posted that). Rotating 'cold water bottles' in the fridge also great. I placed one on the table beside me and could feel the heat being drawn away from my face 😊 I found a cooling gel pad in the fridge which I'd kept because I liked the blue but the towels are doing a great job.

North-facing windows should be closed last in the morning and opened first in the early evening for the coolest air change.

Don't forget that opening any windows while it is hotter outside than inside completely defeats the purpose, regardless of which compass direction they face.

I've started using a fan every night when I sleep.
