I've been applying for retail jobs other than Charity shops for years, and keep getting rejected because for various personal and financial reasons I can't work evenings or weekends which are pretty much mandatory in shop work.

Would there be any way round this? And please don't give me all that bourjois about reasonable adjustments, I've been saying for years that that's a total copout because what's reasonable is open to interpretation at the employer's discretion, which almost never benefits the potential or actual employee.

    have you managed to get as far as interviews by pretending you can work evenings/weekends in the past? if you're able to argue your case in person employers may be more accommodating.

    I had a group based interview at Hollister Co (clothes shop), in Meadowhall a few years back, as soon as I mentioned that, they didn't wanna know.

    Also, the same week, I had one at Meadowhall Argos for a Warehouse position, rejected for the same reason, no evening or weekend availability.

    The irony is, in theory I could work evenings (except Wednesdays which is my Taekwondo night), but the fact there's almost never any transport available from here puts the kybosh on that.

    Unfortunately I don't see any option than to just keep trying to look for that "Perfect Job" till something comes up that doesn't require evenings and weekends. Its harder said than done right now though as the job market is at its all time low.

    From the sounds of your recent posts you really have your heart set on finding a job and you can't give up on your dreams, so the only option is to persevere till you find something ideal. Try work on your strength's, practice and learn new skills while searching but just continue. If you truly have your heart set on this then don't give up and just keep trying.

    You've only truly lost if you give up.

    You never know, you only ever need to find that one employer who is ideal and hires you.

    In the world of work, one can't just declare they have a 'taekwondo night', hobbies have to fit around one's job. You seem to have a number of stumbling blocks in your path to employment. A hobby isn't the same as having childcare responsibilities etc.

    Chris I think what he means is his support staff are not usually available on the evenings to drive him for work. I may be wrong but I think it is the issue of having a driver available at that time. Usually there are less support staff on night shifts and no drivers. My care home has got more drivers recently but we went through a long period of only having one driver for all of us to share. Also there are less staff at night so the waking night staff can’t take us out even if there was public transport available to get us to a job. Some places are very good at getting staff to do overtime for special events. My place is good and I know SheffieldMan said his staff are taking him to a comic convention, but often it is not possible to change staffing hours completely. Is that what you meant SheffieldMan about transport?

    Although I am in the process of applying for a Provisional driving license with a view to cashing in my Enhanced PIP for a Motability car with a view to lessons in an Automatic.

    I really admire how motivated you are SheffieldMan. You are always looking for ways to solve problems and trying new things. Driving lessons - that is brave and exciting.
