In recent news which a lot of you who are into video games have probably heard, GTA 6 will be released as digital only, no disc.

There is the Standard Edition costing £****.99 where you can have a code in Blu Ray case and some people consider this as not being the full game.

And the Ultimate Edition for the full game for the hiked up price £89.99 where you don't even get the case.

Unsurprisingly a lot of people are annoyed by this.

While it doesn't affect me personally since I don't have a modern console and so I may never end up playing the game, and I don't really feel desperate to either, I do still see it as a negative and can understand why a lot of people are annoyed, I like physical media, I like to have the case and disc whether it's a video game, movie, whatever, I'm not interested in streaming and downloads, I also don't like the idea that to have the full game you have to pay more money than what video games usually cost, and because it's digital only you'll never be able to buy a cheaper second hand copy or lend your copy to a friend or family member.

It does seem a bit like Rockstar are taking the ****, so to be honest I would find it amusing if the game tanked, and tanked really badly.

What do you think, do you care?

Well, I must say I'm really enjoying the conversation so far.

I'm not buying GTA 6 for the sole reason Rockstar announced also that they will require actually ID before being allowed to play online.

Meh, I stopped caring about GTA after playing GTA 2 on the PC several years ago, if people wanna pay £89 for it, more fool them.

The Sony fans are welcome to it, just keep that expensive **** off my Xbox.

Yeah prices of AAA games are ridiculous and I stopped buying them ages ago. I get more fun these days on indie games or games that are roughly £5-£15 on steam. I haven't bought a game for more than £20 in roughly around 3/4 years.

Back in the 80s, I used to buy classics on the Spectrum such as the Codemasters games for about 3 quid a pop, even "full price" games were no more than about £9-10.

Yeah, it was the same for me as a kid. I could always get games cheaper. But that's the reason why these corporations don't want to do physical media now, as they know they lose money on people second hand buying their game.

And still, in shops such as CEX, they continue to sell games worth £40-50 for about £15 boxed.

I mean OK yeah they're second hand but come on, most people know they'd get double that selling their old games on eBay, it's just such a faff though.

I've not played any 2D ones. Maybe one day I'll give one of them a try. I've played all of the 3D ones from GTA 3 to GTA 5, I would say probably the best made one is San Andreas, it's actually more advanced than 5 in some ways, my personal favourite is GTA 3 though, I just love the atmosphere and how it feels.

I remember buying games for my Acorn Electron and Atari 800XL for just £1.99 each brand new. I remember the more expensive ones for around £9.99 too, rather than a typical clear cassette case they'd usually be in a slightly bigger black clamshell case.

That's why they were dearer though, more pointless packaging that nobody ever uses.

    I also don't care. 😄

Never got into GTA V myself. Much preferred the earlier single player games, particularly San Andreas and Vice City, though I had several other titles from the early years as well.

I have no intentions of buying GTA 6 myself. But even if I did, a code wouldn't bother me. Even with the disc for Call of Duty I seem to have to have to download hours of updates every month which is incredibly frustrating as it breaks my daily routines. I don't know why they can't either update in the background while playing, or provide some sort of notification beforehand showing the date of the next update, so I could prepare by turning the Xbox on a few hours earlier.

Now Sony are going to cease physical disc production for ALL new games being released on Playstation consoles starting from Jan 2028.

Once GTAVI comes to PC it'll be mass pirated. I imagine many people who dont want it now due to no true physical version will get it that way.

And given how the industry is going, pirates offer a better product than both officially physical and digital releases.

Not condoning this, but it's food for thought, as all media industries must offer better versions of products than pirates do in order to reduce piracy.

never keen on buying something that could then be withdrawn at the discretion of another party but I’ve waited so many long years for this game that I’ll shamelessly admit my principles are going on hold for GTA VI and I’ll be buying it on day 1
