in Start here and say hello!

Hope you are all well here, I am a 58 yr old man who has a few health problems and subsequently a few benefit problems. I have just got a new puppy and although I'm getting to love her she's driving me crazy with her antics, hand biting, constant wailing if I leave the room for more than 5 min and incessant going to the toilet inside the house. I have a cat who will not tolerate her being close, she just hisses and strikes out with her claws if the dog gets in her space I'm a little concerned as the cat won't eat or drink water when the dog is about.

    Hi @Dhaladog welcome to the Community from me too. I hope you enjoy your time on the forum. Any questions just ask.

    Puppies are very hard work at first. You have to train them to use puppy pads then take them out several times a day so they get used to going to the toilet outside. Do you have a garden?

    They are also very chewy and bite a lot. Does your puppy have toys that they can bite and chew.

    How long have you had your puppy and how old is she? You have to give her time to settle in at the moment she is probably feeling a little lost in a new home.

    Could you put the cat's food and drink somewhere the puppy does not go or in another room?

    I hope you get a lot of enjoyment from your puppy what have you named her?

    Puppies 'mouthing' is quite easy to stop, you just have to think like a litter member!

    Those needle-like puppy teeth, the ones your going to be picking up off the floor for a few weeks, they hurt one's feet and hands, do they not?

    Puppies learn what kind of mock biting is permissible amongst their litter mates, quite simply by whether the 'victim' cries out or not.

    Any time the wee monster takes a liking to a finger or toe, just let out a sharp cry of pain, whether it actually hurts or not. If i'm playing with my now 8yo Staff, and one of his teeth contact my hand, and I cry out, he drops his head and looks guilty!

    Of course he hasn't really hurt me, as the is very tuned into what his teeth are contacting during a tug of war game. As soon as he detects fingers, he instinctively starts releasing his grip. His teeth often very gently slide down my fingers as he grabs the Kong toy, but he never bites.
