Retrospective backdated disabled council tax ?

hello seeking some advice please I have been living in my adapted house since 2008 following major surgery & rehab ( the adaptations were via local borough grant _ carried out b6 the borough council) I have recently discovered I qualify and always have qualified for disabled council tax reduction I wondered if any one knows legally if it can be backdated or & if so how far ?


I was too ill when I came home from hospital to seek out further benefits( & stupidly believed the departments worked together) since then I have too medicated via nhs controlled drugs ..I find all paperwork totally overwhelming.i live on my own .so it’s my fault I didn’t claim it .

I honestly also never knew about it I was looking to see if there is any legal precedent or any advise ..although I doubt i will see a penny of it thanks in advance

My advice to anyone check if you are entitled to disabled council tax reduction..

    Hi @zoob, that's very frustrating for you. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll backdate it much. The most is 3 months depending on circumstances. I found this breakdown from Citizens Advice really helpful - Applying for Council Tax Reduction - Citizens Advice. I'm sorry it isn't the best news I'm afraid, but you might be able to get a little backdated.

    I did this in Somerset Council. I received 5yrs full backdated pay after completing the necessary form and getting my GP to sign off on it.

    Thanks for sharing that @Fight4Justice. May I ask were there mitigating circumstances and how did you go about requesting this please?
