Automatic PIP award extension
Hello,
My 3 year PIP award is due to end in February 2027. I hadn’t received a letter in the post about it until today, where they declared that my award has been extended to March 2028 (without a reassessment).
It’s such a relief that it’s been extended an extra year without assessment but I wondered why it wasn’t the full three years like before? I’ve been awarded PIP twice and both awards have been for three years each.
Also, I’m currently on advanced mobility payment so I receive a free local bus pass etc. This expires in Feb 2027 (as per my original end date). How would I go about extending it again, now that my award has been extended another year.

Got the same format letter. For your bus pass its the local council. I realised mine had run out so just took the PIP letter and ID into the council office (you can usually renew online) councils are 'supposed' to send you a reminder a few months in advance but somehow I never got the letter.

Out of the blue, I got a letter re PIP yesterday, mine was due to run out end of '28 & now, I've been awarded until '31. It sure put a smile on my face. 😁 Then thought of the age I'll be then & 😭😉
What annoys though, with DLA, the predecessor, I & many, many others with life term disabilities were awarded for life. No expensive reviews for DWP & no stress for us either. There was more common sense around then. Iain Duncan Smith has a lot to answer for, giving us PIP & UC!! 🤯 Forget Labour with their views on benefits & disabled, IDC was nasty & dispicable! 🤬 The really crazy part, he started UC in 2014 & only now or nearly, 12 years later everyone has been moved over. 🤯 All that money wasted over the years, it beggars belief!

The extensions aren't based on your conditions or previous award, that's not what they're for at all. They're just using the same length for huge numbers of claimants so they don't have to review each one individually for another year or so.

mine hasn’t been extended and it runs out October 2027 so there obviously is some kind of algorithm they are using to meet a certain criteria etc

Yes, but it's not a new award, which is why the length isn't as long as it would be from a normal review. The extensions are all for roughly the same length.

yes true, I’m just still baffled as to why I haven’t got an extension to be honest. It’s quite annoying 🤯

Do you know the reason for some people getting extensions / others are not?

No, I'm afraid I don't know that. There hasn't been any official guidance published on which claimants are getting extensions so we're just trying to reverse engineer it from seeing who gets the extensions at the moment.
So far it looks like no-one with an initial end date after 2028 gets an extension. And I suspect that anyone already under review won't get this extension. (They should still get the old 12 month extension if their PIP is about to run out before the review is completed).

PIP is an improvement in some areas.
DLA failed people who had no diagnosis, and also wasnt as broad in the needs it supported.
Also thankfully they didnt cap the time between reassessments to 3 years like was done with ESA.0
