Would a free Brazillian Jiu Jitsu trial be suitable for a disabled 50 year old?
Above.
As you know I already have about 36 years of combined Japanese Karate and South Korean Taekwondo experience, I signed up last night for a free BJJ trial at Gracie Barra in Neepsend on the 6th of August.
Should I cancel on medical grounds or go ahead and attend? As I recall it's a mix of Judo and wrestling, with grappling moves and being thrown around a lot.
I'll look up some footage on YouTube.
But anyway, can anyone answer the main question?

Hello @SheffieldMan1976, that's a good question, there's a lot of grappling and floor movement in Jiu Jitsu. Before cancelling, could you email the place you booked the trial with to ask? They may be able to adjust some of the moves or find a way to make it accessible for you.

Doesn't sound like a good idea for a man with back problems and mobility issues. What would the DWP say about it?

Did you watch the second episode of Ann Droid last night?
They had a whole section on BJJ. I had never heard of it before and couldn't work out what it stood for, only just realised after reading your post.

They don't need to know.
They could argue that my Taekwondo training is just as dangerous, in fact I trained this morning, mainly on footwork and stances.

I didn't mean you should inform them, but if they got to hear about it, is there no chance they might wonder about your mobility problems, if you can in fact participate in martial arts? I struggle on and off a toilet, never mind any physical sports.

Unless I tell them (which wouldn't happen, even I'm not THAT daft) or anyone else snitches on me, that won't happen.

You know your own busines i'm sure, but if it was me, I wouldn't like to be looking over my shoulder for the DWP investigators.

plus you never know who is on a forum

Most members on here are also disabled, including most of the Mods… More to the point, nobody would be vindictive enough to report me, and even if they did, the DWP would do 2 things, **** all and nothing.

It's worth remembering that there are multiple descriptors each providing points towards a PIP award.
Not every descriptor is about physical movement. In fact, only 3 out of the 12 descriptors are specifically about movement.
I don't see anything wrong here at all. Forum regulars will be aware that the OP has multiple conditions. While they might lose a few points if they were reported and reassessed, I think it is almost impossible that they would lose PIP altogether.
There's no point in living if you're scared of the DWP constantly. Do whatever you want with your time and money. If you get reported or reassessed, that's a bridge to cross if it arrives.

That's fair enough, but at the same time people shouldn't come on here complaining about not being able to walk for 30 seconds, and should they get a Motability car, whilst also extolling their physical abilities.

i wasn't saying anything about the mods or those who have disabilities, i was thinking more of the lines that anyone could join a forum and they could be from the dwp, so be careful what you put on a forum

Anybody could join the forum, but they could do nothing without forum user's full name.

They would still be awarded Enhanced Mobility based on their need to always travel with another person. That entitles them to a Motability vehicle, regardless of any physical abilities.
You may not think it's fair, but that's how the system works. Personally, I've been housebound for the past 5 years after losing the ability to drive, partly down to not fitting the criteria to access the Motability scheme. But that is the fault of the system, not any individual who does meet the criteria.

I would be more worried about the insurance side of things. If something was to go wrong and you hadn't declared any limitations they may not be any comeback.

Don't worry about that, I was fully open and honest about my physical limits when I filled in the online form last week.
And they said it was no problem.

Here's a list of the PIP descriptors - pip_descriptors.pdf
Preparing food, Managing a condition, Communicating verbally, Reading words & symbols, Engaging face to face, Budgeting, and Following a journey are all descriptors which can be fulfilled without any physical disability at all.
Going to a martial arts class once a week with a relative or carer does not detract from any of those descriptors.

We want this discussion to continue, but we’re concerned that things are becoming quite tense and could easily escalate.
Please remember that all discussions on Scope’s online community should remain civil, supportive, and safe.
We will continue to closely monitor this discussion, but if it escalates further, we may choose to pause, close, or even hide the discussion.
PIP is claimed for a wide variety of reasons and making assumptions about someone's situation can quickly cause unnecessary conflict. It is important that you are open and honest with DWP when applying for PIP.
Please consider what personal details you share and keep all interactions respectful.0 -
Due to concerns about some of the comments here, I've emailed @Community_Scope, no response as yet.
More to the point, like I said this morning, I've been doing Martial Arts in general since June 1990 (I was 14 at the time) and nobody's said a word.

Like I said, I mentioned all my physical limits on the online form last week, and they said it was no problem.
