Why Celebrate Christmas?

Good question or maybe it should be for some What are we celebrating at Christmas time?

i am not really religious but do understand something of the Christian Bible. And think it has got to the point in the amount of commercialisation and therefore consumption at this time of year. There is very little mention of the Nativity story or even Carols. 

A few years ago I went to one of those German or European markets in a certain cathedral city. The market was right next to the cathedral and on the nearest corner, the dean had put a shed with several boards allowing you to put what you thought abot Xmas!

In contrast what would do at this time of year if we had No Xmas. In a way we eat lots more to keep warm in the longer darker nights or shorter days. Maybe we are trying to combat hibernation which happens in other mammals. 

I suppose tge super commercialisation has on has come to an extant from the US of A. With the scarlet red cloaking of St Nick into Father Christmas air Santa Claus. 

And several of of those traditions from countries like Germany for the Xmas tree etc

Also what of the word Christmas? That must be from Christ Mass. ie celebrating Nass from the Roman Catholic Christianity and thus originally from Italy.

And then there’s the addition of all those sales. The newest one being that Black Friday thing just because it’s after American Thanksgiving.

its no wonder we don’t know what it’s abot?!!

I am not religious at all and, like most people, simply celebrate it because most people do. I avoid a lot of things about and around it when I can simply to make my own life easier but for most of the time just give the appearance of joining in with the masses.

@DannyMoore it is simpler and easier to go along with the masses especially if you are in a relationship or are dealing with family. Unless the group you wish to spend time with has the same belief set as yourself (whatever that belief set is) you will end up isolating yourself even further because they will never understand. In my case it's join and follow or spend no time with my children & grandchildren. Whilst I am generally happy to go my own way it makes Xmas easier if I have support even if it is only for a few days.

Families and relationships require compromise to be successful. This is an unfortunate fact. Our lives isolate us enough we should not contrive to isolate ourselves in addition.

Swearing, as such, is merely a crude sort of humour at it's heart. It isn't something to vilify or laud. It's only language. I was brought up in a background of bad language even though my mother and father always refused for it to be used inside the home. Looking back I am surprised at my father, usually a very genial and yet foul-mouthed person at work and in the pub, and his restraint when things did not go according to plan. He had better restraint than I ever have. However, at work and at school, bad language has always proliferated in my life and so I just accept it and use it when appropriate. Unfortunately, like many other things, it has become overused now but hopefully that will swing back to better levels again. I see no reason to outcast people for the language they choose to use and, if I find it unacceptable, feel it is my place to be elsewhere.

Choosing a set of beliefs or a specific stance for or against something would not make me better than others, nor would it make me worse. It just makes me ME. I may be of little importance to some or of great importance to a few but I am still myself in all things. People have the freedom of choice and the ability to choose their own path through life and I will not condemn others simply for making bad choices. Everyone makes mistakes. I learn from mine to become a better person, not everyone is so lucky.
