Ha ha, Lerwick has 15C. I don't think they do summer up there!

I go off what temp my boiler is at 🤣 it is around 30 degrees Celsius where I am at. Mainly sat in a pair of shorts on with a tower fan ticking over watching a film with the blinds closed and five windows open in the living room.

Good idea keeping the blinds closed @Rag_793. I haven't opened our bedroom curtains for a few weeks now in an effort to keep it cool!

I open them to let the air vent and all the bad energy has to be Avada Kedavra‘d

I don’t know why but I have set up a Facebook account again, to try and rebuild some bridges that I have burned since 2023. I have sent a few messages, but I doubt I won’t get any replies.

You never know @Rag_793. If you don't get any replies then that's ok. It's a sign to move forward. People come and go throughout our lives.

This current heatwave has nearly destroyed me. Temperatures within my flat have frequently hovered between 34 and a whopping 38 degrees even when temperatures outside were lower.

My 8000 BTU portable aircon has been a life saver because without it i would not have been able to continue living in my furnace of a home. There's been a price to pay though which is a near doubling of my last three monthly electricity bills. Normal Electricity bill £60pm, Heatwave Electricity bills £110pm.

i'm usually about £100 per month for electricity and gas in the summer, with the central heating on soon, I dread to think.

My south facing flat is very nearly unbearable during heatwaves.

My emersion tank cupboard fills my flat with hot air 24/7 365 days a year.

My £150 fan doesn't cool my flat at all but it does manage to increases the temp.

My 8000 BTU portable aircon unit works well but only when its pointing directly at me.

A through-breeze only works if you've got windows on both sides of your home - i don't.

Now eagerly awaiting Black Friday to hopefully purchase a 14,000 BTU portable aircon unit.

The solution is to stop the heat getting in!

Awnings/shutters or reflective screens/aluminium foil on the OUTSIDE of your windows will keep you cool indoors. Open your windows in the early/late hours - the cooler air outside will draw out the stuffy air. Blocks of ice in rooms have the same effect.

Plants will also work their magic indoors!

Ps I have an adjustable portable fan which creates no heat in use. Cost £25 and pennies to recharge. Works a treat!

These are really useful tips! I’d also add a small portable or rechargeable fan, especially for travelling or working away from home. Keeping a bottle of water in the fridge and avoiding unnecessary journeys during the hottest part of the afternoon can help too. Would be interesting to hear what cooling gadgets everyone else recommends!
