I'm terrified of the future
I'm new here, im 33M and have struggled with mental health issues since I was 18. In the past 3 years ive been diagnosed with Autism/ADHD as well as Tourettes Syndrome and potential ME/Fibromyalgia (on referral for it).
I dont wish to make this post political but honestly im terrified of the future of our country and Europe in general. Its clear to me theres a path that wants to be taken that wants to penalise and look down on my invisible disabilities, as well as my son also being Autistic.
Ive been through CBT 4 times, CMHT, referral to see a psychologist, been through crisis team in the past and honestly at the moment im struggling to look away from the news as so much feels like it will affect me and my family in years to come. Im scared of our finances, security, discrimination for both of my children's future and been a liability to my wife.
Im on several medications, exhausted and in pain on a daily basis and apart from the usual eat healthy, get off the Internet information I just feel so alone in this feeling and I dont know how id manage to live of politics takes a turn for the worst.
Please tell me im not alone in this, im tired of being tired, and seeing so much hurt happen in this world while being unable to do anything about it.

that kind of hopelessness is exactly what the 1% want you to feel. there are still things you can do, like making things better in your local community. build connections with your neighbours, get involved in whatever you can, while pressuring politicians where you are to demand better. there are things you can do. the negative future you're fearing is not inevitable.

Thank you for responding, I know deep down its the reaction they want, im just spiralling at the moment. Life for me has been difficult since ive been young, a dad with mental health issues, my wife is epileptic and has taken many years to become somewhat stable on high dosage of medication as well as my son needing support, ive been in a state of fight and flight for literal years and now this feeling only impending doom wont shift.
I struggle to do much right now, even going to the shops with my wife takes it out of me, and theres not many other avenues I can go down for support. He'll even posting on here felt stupid inside, but I think I admit I needed to reach out and not feel alone.

Hi @cozzie333 and welcome to the community. Please don't feel stupid for posting here. It's good that you've reached out. I'm so sorry you're struggling so much right now.
Do you have any mental health support?

@Rachel_Scope thank you, Just my wife really and ongoing therapy privately. I fear so much because there's little I can do to protect my family, I struggle to support them and know if things go bad (yes im getting at the whole reform stuff ongoing) as a family we will be up the creak as we have little outside family support. It feels everything that we have as a diagnosis or illness is simultaneously being scrutinised as of late which just sends me backwards again.

It's definitely a difficult time at the moment so it's understandable that you would be worried. I would suggest staying away from the media as much as you can as there is a lot of scaremongering.
Would you feel comfortable in contacting your GP and explaining your worries? They could maybe refer you for some more support?
Is your wife aware of your worries?

@Rachel_Scope I appreciate the concern, but honestly ive been back and forward with several GP's for over 13 years and had to advocate for myself as much as I can.
My wife knows everything we always try to be clear with each other on how we feel especially around health as we dont want it affecting our children.
It may sound silly but I still struggle to accept I'm "disabled" despite being this way for so long and struggling so much. My overall Health has deteriorated over the past 2/3 years, Im in pain daily and still feel like I should be doing more because of past trauma.
I start spiralling to the point of thinking ill end up alone on the streets or something because I can't cope, but still be told im well enough to not need support. At what point does somebody become "severe" and how do you even see that with invisible disabilities. It seems that people are more likely to believe what others say online or in the media instead of what actual stats and surveys show (which is usually the opposite). I dont know, im probably rambling now, I just struggle right now to see a future in this country anymore tbh.

I'm really happy to hear that you and your wife are open with each other. Keep speaking to her so she can support you.
I think it can be difficult to accept that we're disabled sometimes. It prevents us from doing whatever we want and if it appears in later life there is also the grief for what we used to be able to do.
No decisions have been made about what will change with benefits, if anything, so try not to imagine the worst case scenario. I understand that is easier said than done. As I said, avoid mainstream media and scaremongering articles as they will just feed the worry.
I see that you have been in CBT and other types of therapy but I wanted to mention DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy). I did this many years ago as part of a group and it worked wonders for my anxiety and depression. I know we are not in the same situation but maybe it could be helpful to you? Here's some more information just in case: Mind - DBT.

@Rachel_Scope Thank you, I struggle with addiction at times (nothing ever major but I can see the habits developing and I attempt to cut them out for example gambling too much so I self excluded and haven't tried since) but news has been the latest one now.
Ive had brief encounters with DBT but not specifically this as a stand alone therapy. I am on a waiting list for compassion based therapy with a psychologist, so I can attempt to question more there.
Thank you for at least dedicating some time towards helping, it means a lot.

You're very welcome @cozzie333. I hope you aren't waiting too long for the therapy.
The community could be good as a bit of a distraction for you. We have our Coffee Lounge where you can chat about anything. Anything that is political is put into a separate category so you can avoid those.
