PIP increased at review. Is it possible to get it backdated?

Hello all, I’m posting here because I’m hoping to get some advice on a matter regarding PIP and wonder whether anyone has been in a similar situation.

I was awarded PIP about 2-3 years ago after 5years in hospital and received standard for daily living. I eventually called after getting settled into to my supported living to challenge this decision as I felted I should receive enhanced daily living and was rejected.

A few weeks later my community nurse called on my behalf and over the phone they said I could be awarded standard mobility too if I accepted their decision. My nurse advised me to take this offer as I could always appeal at a later date which is what I really wanted to do. About a month later I wanted to appeal as I strongly felt I should receive enhanced daily living and we tried but they said they wouldn’t accept because I’d already appealed and it was too late.

Now recently I had a standard review and they decided to award me enhanced daily living and enhanced mobility.

I am extremely grateful for this, but I am left wondering whether it is possible to get the daily living component backdated because I still feel they made the wrong decision 3 years ago but I read online that this is not possible.

I was wondering whether anyone had any advice regarding this or whether anyone has been in a similar situation where they have increased your award at review with little to no changes in circumstances.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @GoldenSilence, welcome to the community ☺️

Glad to hear you were finally awarded enhanced rates after those previous rejections. I'm not too sure if they would be able to backdate it to the start of your claim now. I think it's unlikely, but I don't have direct experience of this, so I hope one of our members might have been through something similar and can share how it worked for them.

It might be worth speaking to a trained benefits adviser anyway to see if they can take a look for you and give you any more solid advice about whether you can challenge it. If that's something you'd like to do, you can search for local help here: Turn2Us - AdviceFinder

Hope you can get some answers soon!
