What do you call these insects?
What's this called?
Apparently there are all sorts of regional names for them and not everyone grew up calling them cheesy-bobs. Who knew?!
Did you have a name for them beyond their normal scientific name?

Wood lice, I have them in my house as the older bits of my house was built in the 1800, but to my grandchildren I call them ‘mini beasts’ , never ever heard them being called cheesy bobs .

When I find them in a kitchen cupboard it's usually 'eurgh'!
But I've never heard anyone call them anything other than a wood louse!

I can't believe anyone calls them chucky pig or slater!
They've always been 'wood louse' to me.

🤣 There's no way that some of these are real, surely?

Astounded by the lack of cheesy bobs everywhere. To be clear, I also call them woodlice most of the time, but for some reason our family has the cheesy bob word too. Although my mum would say that the ones that are curled up are cheesybobs more than the ones that are out flat and crawling around… I don't really understand the logic. I suspect there isn't any.
Gosh I had no idea what it was in Dutch @SmellyBin, that's so funny 😂 it's not an elegant language, is it?!

Are you seriously gonna take that one thing to think we've not got an elegant language @Rosie_Scope or do you know other non-elegant Dutch expressions?!?! You're gonna make me lose sleep over this, because of course now I need to come up with fairly eloquent Dutch expressions to prove you wrong: look at the Dutch with their wooden shoes being lovely, elegant creatures 🤭

Just reminding myself of the word Hagelslag from the toast discussion @SmellyBin 😅 there is a certain… distinctiveness to the Dutch words I do know. The Dutch themselves I'm sure are very elegant with their lovely tulips and windmills and wooden shoes. And very tall, very elegant people, if I remember my trips to Amsterdam well 😁

Cool! What've you been doing in Amsterdam @Rosie_Scope

All I want to know is how to get rid of the blighters !!!!! Apparently squirt vinegar around all your skirting boards, 😂 😂 😂, my house smells like a jar of picked onions 🧅 😂

That made me laugh @Dynamisante🤣 Pickled onions🤣At least you found a way to get them out of your home🤣
I've only ever known them as wood-louse1 -
Woodlouse. They like to climb under our front door and they drive me mad! Does the vinegar actually work @Dynamisante? I need to know before I also have a house that smells of pickled onions 😂

Woodlice are actually crustaceans not insects. related to crabs etc. I think they're quite interesting but understand not wanting them all over the home!

@Rachel_Scope i squirted it around the skirting boards in the front room last night 😂 I don’t see any dead ones in there ! Maybe it’s the smell that keeps them away, I might put it around my doors, actually to be honest it doesn’t smell at all

I have wooden floors so doesn’t stain or do any damage, don’t think I would be doing it if I had light carpet !

I'm not convinced any of these scented repellents actually work.
I use vinegar spray to clean windows but that doesn't seem to stop anything around them.
Also tried a few different mint & lemon sprays around all the window and door frames to stop spiders…and within an hour watched them just walk over it again! 😅

This is a great fun fact @Autumnleaf! I can see the similarities between crabs and woodlouses now you've said this…
