📚️October 2026 Book Club - Banned Books📚️
Banned Books won the October Book Club Poll!
Thank you @SmellyBin for suggesting this category😊.
Just like last month, you’re in control of what, when and how many books you want to read and feel free to read any genre of banned books that takes your fancy!
If anyone wants to read a book together, that would be great but it is more than okay if you'd rather solo read too! No pressure either way.
We’ll use this discussion to share our thoughts, reviews and general bookish chat.
I also recently stumbled across the idea of fan casting and I thought it would be fun to talk about that here too! Fan casting is when fans choose real life actors or celebrities they want to play characters in a movie, TV show or book etc.
Here are some banned books as well as more banned, censored and challenged books for inspiration.
Are there any that shock you? I was quite surprised by Captain Underpants being banned in America😄.
What do you think you will read next month?

Yay, thanks @Mary_Scope btw - why didn't you vote?
I am looking forward to see what everyone will be reading. I am still wondering, pondering, undecided what to choose, either Loveless by Alice Oseman, Mockingbird by Harper Lee, or ooooh the brain lets me down. I had it all lined up, now I can't remember the third. Well, anyway, I was gonna say that I am very much open to suggestions so this isn't set in stone yet.
And with the brain fog I also cannot yet wrap my head around the fan casting, the page is a bit long. Ultimately, is it that you see someone in your imagination that is who you think looks like the character in a book? That often happens to me.
Happy reading everyone 🌸

Well due to my Temporal type of Auditory Processing Disoreder (APD) which is the underlying cause of my dyslexia symptom I avoid books.
For mereading books is too stressful.

I had completely forgot @SmellyBin! But I would have voted banned books😂
They sound like some very good options, I'm very intrigued by The Handsmaid Tale at the moment but not 100% sure yet either. There's a lot of great books on there!
You have a really good point about the fan casting link too, I'll remove the link and just put a description of what it is. You've hit the nail on the head with the description.
I enjoy thinking about what actor would play each character in books, this is a great website Fan Casting Platform to explore if it's something you're interested in😊
This is understandable @dolfrog, I can see how that would make reading books stressful.0 -
The banned books site is really interesting @Mary_Scope! I've read 1984 and didn't realise it was banned in 12 countries! I actually bought To Kill a Mockingbird and just haven't got round to reading it. I think I'll give it a go 😊 Has anyone else read it?

I will be reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.
It is a story of Mariam who is sent to Kabul to marry when she is only fifteen. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager Laila. When the Taliban take over life becomes a desperate struggle.
Khaled Hosseini also wrote The Kite Runner which I have read.
I have read To Kill A Mockingbird @Rachel_Scope it covers the coexistence of good and evil. There are also elements of humour. A good read.

i think charlottes web should be banned as it has a 8 legged beast in it, i read it as a child and i can't think of any reason why its banned. Lord of the flies i read at middle school and watched the film, i found it fascinating that a group of children could turn. I own mein kampf and still have to read it, i still don't want to take over the world because of the paperwork involved. IT i have seen both films, never read the book
I can see banning some books but others i can't understand it at all

Happy October!!
I haven't read that book @Bluebell21 but it sounds very interesting and emotional. I'm looking forward to your review!
I read Lord of the Flies in school, it's a pretty good book @kreacher. Have you watched Yellowjackets? It's sort of similar with the premise of a plane crashing and teenagers being trapped in the wilderness for months and months!
I'm thinking about reading Animal Farm by George Orwell, has anybody read that?1 -
The third I wanted to mention was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I found Loveless so that is the one I'll be reading. Probably somewhere next week…
Your book sounds intriguing @Bluebell21 and unfortunately still very timely. It reminds me of Meryl Streep doing a talk at the UN once (if I am not mistaken) about the girls and women in Afghanistan who have less freedom than the birds and the squirrels in the park. I am looking forward to read what you think.

I loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo @SmellyBin!! I still think about it quite often😂. Please let me know when you read it as I'd love to talk about it😍
They're making it into a Netflix film and I'm quite nervous because I just hope they do it justice and it would have been perfect as an 8 episode series instead.1 -
I loved Animal Farm. A wonderful allegory, with subtle humour throughout. I would also recommend One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1984 and Of Mice and Men. I've got Fahrenheit 451 on my TBR list, but it's unlikely I'll get round to reading it this month.

I did Of Mice and Men for GCSE @MissMarple. It ruined it for me! I'd love to read Fahrenheit 451 too. I love dystopian stories.

Has anybody read Fanny Hill (or, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure)? 🙈
As a big fan of epistolary literature, this often-banned book immediately came to mind 🚫
I chanced to find a copy in the book-exchange at my gym, but havent yet gotten around to reading it 📚 ...it's on the list!

I just found out Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is even a banned book. And for free through Amazon…

Oh wow I didn't know that @SmellyBin! Off to Amazon I go.

Good to hear your review of Animal Farm @MissMarple because my copy of it arrived today! I'm hoping to start that on the weekend 🐽🐗🐓Really nice to see you back on the book threads btw😊
I also read Of Mice & Men for GCSE in school @Rachel_Scope, can't remember much of it other than Curleys wife wearing red nail varnish meant she was basically the devil!!!
I haven't read that book @Epistle_Rich, do you recommended? I also just googled epistolary literature as I haven't come across it before and it sounds fascinating!! What are you favourites from that genre?
Thank you for sharing @SmellyBin, have you put it on your TBR?😄0 -
read animal farm at school, its a good book, i would reccommend it
