Wife causing grief over fibre upgrade
My wife is causing me extreme grief over our necessary full fibre upgrade.
She has a fire phobia and doesn't like things left plugged in overnight - even the Sky box !
We need a full fibre upgrade which includes 3 separate "boxes" needing 24/7 power - which she doesn't accept are necessary !
She tells me that if I go ahead - she won't live with me any longer !
She is recovering from womb Cancer and is extremely liable to stress
Don't know what to do…..

Oh dear @Wibbles, this sounds very stressful. How is your wife doing with her recovery?
Is there another full fibre upgrade you can do that doesn't require 24/7 power? Even if it means changing provider?0 -
Remind her that there were dozens of times as many always-connected devices around her in the hospital, without which her treatment would not have been possible. In addition, a new home network is essential for your home medical devices.

remind her that the fridge and freezer are always plugged in

Buy more smoke alarms and install them close to the new equipment, work out a plan to escape should there be a fire?
Ask for fire safety literature from the manufacturers, to try and reassure her?
Or could you place the main box and power outlet in a place that is separate from the main living space? E.g an attached garage with a fire retardent door or something?
Maybe first you could sit down with your wife and discuss the options, and see if there is anything that might reassure her? Just taking her fears seriously might go a long way to reassuring her.
I'm always a bit nervous about new electrical equipment myself, so we usually plug new things in and run them during the day and under supervision for the first few days, but turn it off at night, just to make sure it is not getting too hot etc. That might help her too?

It sounds like your between a rock and a hard place 🤨 remind your wife that so many things are left in and on power overnight. Fridges, Freezers, House Alarms, Electric Cars, TV Boxes, Computers and so much more.
As well as many medical devices that require power 24/7. Even the fuse box in your house is technically switched on 24/7…..
Many Hospital’s, Government Buildings and countless infrastructures are powered up 24/7
The Electrical System in so many homes today is far safer than it was over 20+ years ago.I personally have two surge protector extension leads for my broadband, ps5, tv, soundbar and subwoofer. Each item such as the tv and ps5 are all hardwired to the broadband box.
Certain items in the flat such as the microwave, washer, toaster, one cup and air fryer all get switched on when used and off after used.

Do let her know, fibre can’t cause a fire, it is impossible, it’s literally just signal light travelling through glass. There’s no electrical current in the fibre at all. As an MOD electronic engineer who worked on fibre and triax systems in the 1980s, I can say with total confidence: it’s basically impossible for fibre itself to ignite or overheat.” It's safer than the old copper telephone signal.

She's been given the all clear by the hospital specialist and signed off
She is now dealt with by our local hospital with a twice yearly check - So "physically" she's fine !

Thanks - I am aware of all that - the wife is not though and no amount of information will make her…. ps I too am an ex MOD electronics engineer from 80's - wonder whether I ever came across you in work ? Please send me a PM - If you like..

We have a PM facility? I thought they stopped that?

@ChrisR777Does TATC mean anything to you ?
1 -
Trainee Air Traffic Controllers?
Tooele Applied Technology College?
I have no idea what that means, no.🤣

OK That tells me quite a lot…
1 -
Sorry.... No it was just an MOD term that I wondered whether meant anything to you

So are you going to keep us all in suspenders, what does it mean? 🤔
Why must the new router stay on overnight, btw? I've often switched my router off.
1 -
My last guess at TATC, here goes! Tactical Air Traffic Control or Tactical Air Transport Command? We must be told!
1 -
Did you find a compromise with her @Wibbles?
0 -
Tactical Air Traffic Control is still my best guess.

I would listen to her, right or wrong she is your wife, and thats important.
You can get smart plugs and set a schedule to turn these boxes off when not in use, although they design as always on devices, they wont break if only turned on when you use them. Just be aware when they turned on it might be a minute or so before the internet is online as things need to authenticate and synchronise.

as someone else who struggles with a fire phobia, your wife needs both your understanding and mental health support of her own. her remission from cancer is exacerbating this.
also recommend using smart plugs and other practical aids as a compromise while she works through this.
