PIP first time applying

Hi All, just hoping someone can answer a few questions I have

I applied for pip on the 3rd of July (phone call) had text messages etc forms received, Capita are looking at your claim

Went online to order my meds today from doctors and I can see in there that my medical records have been requested and were sent back to dwp on the 7th October, I didn’t put any other evidence in with my claim form, is this a good sign that they have requested my medical notes to back up what I have put on my form ?, any also how far along am I in all this process ?, does this mean I won’t be getting the phone call to ask how my conditions affect me? Any advice welcomed as I’m all new to this, but (probably wrongly!) thinling this is a good sign? As they will have all the evidence they need ?

Hi @Dynamisante, it's really difficult to put a timeline on these things unfortunately! It is good that they've requested your medical records as it may mean they're getting ready to do an assessment of your claim.

The next step will likely be an assessment. Depending on the severity of your conditions and how much information you included when you applied, sometimes PIP will do a paper-based assessment. This would mean that you won't need to speak to them and they will send through the result in the post after they've completed their assessment. But I'd say the more common outcome is a phone call where they ask you a few more questions.

These things can vary so much from case to case, but I hope it all moves quickly for you!

How are you feeling about it all?

@Rosie_Scope thank you for your reply, I just hope it’s a paper based assessment, like most on here I struggle to use the phone, I’m feeling pretty anxious about it all, to be fair I’ve never bothered applying before as I’ve heard and read all the horror stories and it’s really not my ‘kind of thing’ but things have worsened for me over the last 5 years, I’m just like a different person now than I ever was and it gets me down so much that I can’t do what I used to be able to do. I’ve been surviving on basic UC and LWCRA since giving up work 2 years ago, but I have absolutely no quality of life, I’ve run up debt on credit cards (never done that in my life) and that’s just trying to survive, I get no help with bills etc and they still have to be paid, I do own my own home which is paid for but I can’t even imagine selling up at the moment, it’s just all much to much for me, I’m 63 years old so going into my later life now, I just sometimes think I hope I’m not going to be here much longer (not meaning I’m going to do anything about it!, ) it’s just my state of mind and the way I’m trying to manage everything.

That's understandable @Dynamisante, it's such a stressful thing to go through, especially when you're already dealing with your own day-to-day struggles. Hopefully things will go well and it'll mean you have a bit more freedom to manage your finances. Just having a bit extra each month can really take the weight off things.

Do you have any supportive friends or family around at the moment that you can chat to when things get heavy?

@Rosie_Scope , no support from anyone, and to be honest yes I’m lonely and yes I sometimes think i need someone close to me that i feel safe confiding in, but I don’t have that, so it’s just me myself and I, I have no friends or family members I’m a loner, mostly I’m good about that, but sometimes have thought about it not being healthy, I have no interests in my ‘hobbies’ any longer, can’t concentrate any with books, colouring, jigsaws etc, I’ve tried most everything available, but I just find I always come back to the same conclusion, it is what it is ! I’m not able to do anywhere near what I used to be able to do and it’s hard in my brain as that tells me I can do it , that’s when it’s really tough because I just can’t .

Sorry to hear that @Dynamisante, that sounds so tough. I hope the community can be a place to be around others who understand some of what you're going through. I've definitely been in a similar position before where all that I used to do for fun became difficult or impossible, despite how much my brain wanted to do it. It's not nice at all.

I know it won't change everything that feels difficult, but fingers crossed this PIP claim comes through for you and helps at least some things feel easier to manage 💛
