Sons rehousing

Can someone please advise me about my sons housing problem?. He is a 52 yr old man with autism, he lives independantly with my support. He lives in a 1st floor flat that is totaly unsuitable, since living there he has been diagnosed with copd & asthama. I have approached my local council to have him rehomed but they say that his housing is adequate. He now has terrible panic attacks because of his breathing difficulties. Is there anything that i can do?.

    Hi,

Is there something in the property that's aggravating his breathing? Could an air purifier help at all?

As a single man without a major mobility issue it's extremely unlikely that he would be priority for a ground floor property if that's what he's hoping for?

Councils will frequently lie to people who need housing support to try to get out of spending money to fulfill their legal duty.

His next steps needs to be going to the Councils adult social care team to ask for a Care Act Assessment, in tandem with submitting a homelessness application to the council's housing department. The council will not accept medical evidence from GPs.

No his breathing problems are down to his copd & asthama he has 2 lots of inhalers. The biggest problem is his autism, he doesn't deal with things. Then he has meltdowns, which take a while to settle him down. He has been passed for a 2 bedroomed ground floor property, but that was 2 yrs ago. Its trying to move from there.

A care needs assessment is a good suggestion with a focus on his housing needs, he may be deemed to require supported living rather than being somewhere independent.

Even if one has been done in the past, another one can be done now.

Hi Stella, my son had a OT assessment 2 yrs ago from the councils medical officer. He placed him in band 2 for a ground floor property. But he is stuck there, and his condition has worsened since then. I dont known which direction to take now.😚

Thankyou for that Kimmi, he manages quite well with the families support. But we could help him even more if we could have overnight stays when needed. He is so paranoid having strangers around him, so we need to be careful of who comes into his life.

You need to do the same thing again. At least by doing it before you already have experience of how to get results.
