Do people talking on their phones bother you?

I found all the replies to the 'are we getting worse at talking to eachother' discussion really interesting and someone brought up people using mobiles while you're talking to them (I think @Rachel_Scope, but sorry if I'm mis-remembering!).

One of my pet peeves is someone scrolling their phone when we're having a conversation, but also people using phones in general. Particularly those having VERY loud conversations on buses/trains/libraries or anywhere in public really.

Is that just me or does it bother anyone else? Some of the conversations I've overheard have been very, uhm, intimate and even business calls and deals.

I find people scrolling on their phones while I’m talking to them to be very rude but I think I’ve become accustomed to people having very loud and very public phone calls. Many people just don’t realise how loud their voices are πŸ˜‚

Yes! Makes you feel so unimportant if someone's checking their phone while they're talking to you.

And I can't stand people not using headphones on public transport. Loud conversations are annoying, but the thing that really gets me is people scrolling through TikToks or videos with their sound on. Just hundreds of irritating 3 second clips over and over again. Infuriating!

I'm not brave enough to confront people, but I do partake of a good old British tut and stare if someone's being annoying πŸ˜…

Yes it was me @Carl_Scope! I had a friend who would constantly be scrolling on her phone whilst I was talking to her. I don't know why I never said anything. I just silently seethed instead!

I also can't stand people having phone calls on speaker or playing music without headphones. It's just so rude and no-one cares about your rubbish music πŸ˜†

I just talked about how I had a lovely conversation with a stranger this morning over on our 'are we getting worse at talking to each other?' chat. No phones, just a lovely chat 😊

I love a good tut and stare @Rosie_Scope!

Don't get me started on TikTok videos! I don't mind people on loud phonecalls, well depending on content, but watching things out loud in public is so annoying! At dinner the other night the amount of noise there was because of people sat at tables scrolling videos. I'd have much rather listened to loud conversations or even people on phone calls to groups of people scrolling random videos on TikTok

The buses here, now have a message re using headphones 'Thank you for using headphones, as the noise can affect some people'. A guy didn't bother the other day & the driver called out to him, he did nothing, so at the next stop, came back & told him. 😎

What I hate, are all the people, all ages, that wander along, head down & expect people to go round them. I'm fed up with that & stop, wait for them to walk into my footplate, a solid lump in the shin does make them look up. 🀣

Me too @JessieJ, I noticed it was always me that moves out of the way so I've stopped doing it! πŸ˜…

Driving and using your phone in your hands was banned. I think the same should apply to any moving, the number of people paying more attention to their phone than their surroundings.

When you have a person in a wheelchair who is hard for people to see when they have their eyes open, it get worse when they are in a trance starring into their phone.

Luckily I am reasonably able bodied and not small, I can be a little protective and have been know to put a hand up ( open palm ) to stop someone from hitting my partner and also using a shopping trolley to block their path the same way they block hers.

Maybe not the best behavior but it drives the point home.

I think we have that message now too @JessieJ, but I hardly ever hear our bus drivers using it. I've seen some posters on the trains asking people to use headphones as well, but I think they're mostly ignored! Has the message been effective in your experience? Other than the day the bus driver had to intervene πŸ˜„

Agreed @CarNineSix, I don't know how you'd go about encouraging people to look up but it needs to be a thing. Sometimes you get cyclists looking at their phones while cycling around here which seems pretty dangerous for everyone involved!

This reminds me of one of the BFG's dreams, as described to Sophie at his cave in Giantland.

Someone has written a book that is so interesting, that nobody can put it down. People are walking into things and stepping in front of traffic whilst reading the book. πŸ€”

the only time i deliberately use my phone on public transport is to inform friends/family i'm on my way, people having loud conversations on there phone annoy me and people playing games on there phone with loud music on, i have told people to either stop playing or turn off the music

Same with me, @kreacher, I don't answer my phone on public transport at all if I can help it. What do you find the reaction is like when you ask people to stop playing? Do you get people arguing with you about it?

Due to my Listening disability Auditory Processing Disorder i am Phone Phobic.

When soone is using mobile phone i am not able to use my coping strategy - Lip Reading, so I am not able to process what they are saying.

And APD is is the cause of my dyslexia symptom, so if they want to show me text i may not be able to read it.

So i feel that those who use mobile phones have no understanding of my lifelong communication disability.

Apart from that guy, I've noticed more headphones, some are taking it in, thank goodness.

You also get kids & adults alike, on their phones whilst on escooters, some with a passenger or two. We live in a crazy world with how some tech is used. Only today, I witnessed two young girls on an e scooter, laughing away, jumped off the pavement & then rode along the wrong side off the road, then cut across a car to turn. Do parents not witness this or give them instruction. Be okay, but they are illegal. Only the pay for are, like Voi & have insurance.

sometimes i get aload of abuse but other times they turn down the sound, i don't tend to argue with them because i know they arn't going to do as i ask and its a waste of time

Teaching the rules of behavior on the roads should be taught in schools. Banning private scooters at the same time as allowing scooter-sharing makes it clear that the government is acting solely in the interests of the capitalists who own scooter-sharing.

I saw this the other day - looks like they're thinking of bringing in fines for this kind of behaviour:

People playing loud music on buses could face Β£100 fine - BBC News

Do you think it'll work? I just wonder how it will be policed!

The big phone sketch in Trigger Happy TV comes to mind.

People talking loud on their phone doesn't bother me, but I would find it a bit rude if I was having a convo with someone and they started scrolling on their phone.
