Thank you for sharing this @ChrisR777. What a tragic, tragic accident. There was a documentary on the BBC last night about it that you may be interested in..

I watched it, thanks, and Newsnight, which was an interview with 3 survivors.

So very very sad. An ordinary school morning shattered when a coal tip above Aberfan collapsed. 144 people died including 116 children.

I knew of the accident, i'm sure we all did, but I had no idea the National Coal Board, the Charity Commission etc, that they were in cahoots to deny the families compensation and removal of the tip.

I would like to say I am surprised by this, but I'm not.

The government, the National Coal Board, and the traumatised community jointly paid for the removal of the tips, the community had no choice but to divert £150,000 from public donations. The UK public donated to the families, not to be robbed by a callous coal board. You would have to watch it!

This was so terribly sad. I've read a book written by one of the survivors and it's so harrowing hearing the testimonies of people who tried to rescue those trapped underneath. Just awful how the coal board acted afterwards too!

I remember it. I was 8 so it was the first big news story I remember being aware of and the fact it involved school children was all the more poignant. What I DIDN’T know then was the despicable attitude of the coal board.

Dreadful, avoidable tragedy. The Right Dishonourable Lord Robens imagined it would all be forgotten.
