My husband is about to retire in April. Our ESA is more than retirement pension. Should we not take the pension, if so how would it affect our benefits

Hi holiday and welcome
What other benefits do you receive ?
Do you have an IR element to ESA ?

We receive income related ESA and DLA at the high rate0

DLA is non means tested but at some time soon you will be invited to claim PIP
Normally you defer a state pension to build up extra pension. You can't defer state pension when on income related benefit and get the extra but you do have to tell pension service if you want to defer.

Hi @holiday123
There is a free and impartial Government service called Pension Wise where you can discuss your options with an adviser. Phone 0800 138 3944 to book a free appointment.
Best wishes, Alex1
