Hi, I'm new to the site, would like some help please. My son suffers from mental health problems . He tried to take his life last Monday, luckily it was a cry for help, so was found in time. He is a self employed tree surgeon, would I be able to get him any monetary help from anywhere. He is in no fit state to work at present and is now undergoing help from a psychiatrist . Thankyou in advance for any help or suggestions.

Hi @Mamacaf9, welcome to the community! It's great to have you here.

So sorry to hear about your circumstances, it must be so tough on you all to see your son struggling. I'm really glad to hear he's working with a psychiatrist. I'd advise checking out the online benefits calculator as a starting point, to see what you may be entitled to claim. Have a go, and do come back to us with any questions!

Hi @Mamacaf9 If your son is currently out of work he could apply for Employment and Support Allowance "ESA" (or Universal Credit if you are in a full-service area).
If his condition is likely to persist longer than a year then possibly also Personal Independence Payment "PIP"...
If he pays rent or Council Tax, the possibly benefits from his local council towards these.
I would recommend using an onling calculator as recommended above though, as income/capital can affect entitlement to these benefits.
    Kind regards,
    Mary

Thankyou for your reply, would it be possible for me to arrange everything for him, he doesn't want to talk to anybody, he doesn't even want his family around him, me included I think. Can't seem to get through to him. Thank goodness for the psychiatrist, hopefully they will help him more, but he won't allow me to go with him, he just wants to be alone.xxxx

You wouldn't be able to apply for any benefits on his behalf unless you are his appointee. People usually become an appointee for someone if they don't have the capacity to manage their money, make phones and fill out forms relating to benefits etc.
