Hello @Mummyk   Pleased to meet you welcome.

Thank you for joining and sharing.  Your question the DLA your son has must have the higher rate of the award.  Depends also how long it is for as this is being phased out to be replaced by PIP.

You will need to speak to Motability the scheme providers if you qualify.

If you sons award is the higher rate I have the number for 0300 456 4566.  For more information and advice.

This is due to be soon PIP and you will need sometime to be notified by the DWP to apply.

You will need the enhanced rate of the PIP.  To qualify your son.

Need more information on benefits and what your entitled to . Have a look at our on line benefit checker.

You can find more information about benefits on our website.

Any other benefit enquiries please ask CAB for any additional information.

    Please take care

If your son is in receipt of the relevant mobility award - high - then you can get a Motability car for his needs. It isn't a car that can be used by the family for their needs and pleasure but only for the needs of the claimant. For example dad can't use the car to go to the football with his friends but he could if he took the child with him.

There are no grants for a car - if there were I would be first in the queue!
When looking to get your own vehicle it has to be paid for either in full or by taking out a credit agreement.

If you’re currently on the top rate you can buy a motability car. My son’s disability means that we qualified for the scheme. As the driver of the car I only use the car to transport him.

The main qualifier would be the requirement for your son being on high rate mobility. The second point (already mentioned) is that it's important to understand what you could use if for and you should check with Motability what you would plan to use it for. Not conforming to the rules could cause the benefit to be taken away, regardless of your needs.

If your son is still on DLA rather than PIP then you should also check whether Motability has any restrictions and certainly would not consider providing a car if your son is in the process of being reassessed, until the decision is over.

Motability does not sell you the car, they lease it to you for 3-5 years (depending on modification level) and also any modifications would (like the car) belong to Motability. Once the lease is up they would renew the lease on a new car although it is possible to extend the lease depending on circumstances. It is also possible to purchase the car yourself once the lease is finished rather than give it back and they will be happy to give you a figure for doing so. You would ofc have to finance the purchase yourself.

The lease does include such things as road tax, MOT's, servicing, recovery and a special version of insurance but not fuel. Most cars above the really small ones would use up the complete benefit plus many require an up-front payment which can be quite expensive depending on make and model. All these details are available on their web site www.motability.co.uk so you should check there for simple answers to questions as the site is quite good.
