Cochlear Implant

Hi Guys

I wanted to do a discussion about the "cochlear Implant" as I am re thinking about having it done?

It would be great to hear from other deaf people in the community, who have already had the implant or are thinking about getting one done?

I lost my hearing in 2016, after being admitted to hospital with infections to my leg and hand.
After numerous tests, I was told that I now have "bilateral profound sensori-neural hearing loss" and that I would never be able to hear again.

The hospital were I had my hearing tests, had also arranged for me to have an information session, were someone would talk to me, about the cochlear implant, the operation and also the risks.

When I attended the session, I only stayed for half of it, then left.
The thought of what could go wrong, really scared me and I just couldn't go through with it.
To be honest I don't think I was ready mentally.

I'm now under the care of a vasculitis doctor, who as asked me to re think about having it done? She's also arranged for me to see an ENT doctor tomorrow, to see if its possible to have the implant fitted.

My husband as also spoken to the hospital, who wanted to do the cochlear implant in 2016.
They have said, they are going to send out some information about the implant and she as also made me an appointment to see her.

I think the main reason for me changing my mind, is I am now having problems with my eyesight.
The thought of loosing both eyesight and being deaf, really scares me, so I'm really thinking about having it done.

Thanks
bev :)

    Hi Ami

    Hope your ok sweetie ?

Well when I went to the information session, I was the only person there, who was "profoundly" deaf.
So I think it's for anyone who has hearing problems?

I now have cataracts, due to medication. But because I have "non specific vascilitus".
They are worried, that if I have the eye surgery? I could end up having an infection and go blind.

So my vasculities doctor, as told me to cancel the surgery, until I have seen her eye specialist.
    (Two separate hospitals)

She's amazing and I can't thank my nuerologist enough, for asking her to help me. ?

How are you? Are you still in hospital? ?

    Hi Ami ?

    Sorry for the late reply.

    38 weeks! You poor girl.
So you will be in hospital for Xmas?

No sweetie they haven't mentioned that hospital.
(It's a bit to far, for me to travel)

I've had my appointment with the eye specialist and my vasculities nurse was there to.
He checked my ears, and put that long scope up my nose and down my throat, he said everything is perfect.

He's also told me to have to eye surgery and the cochlear implant.

I told him if I end up having an infection? I  comming back for him lol.
I really don't want someone, drilling through my skull,

Anyway I will let you know what I decide?

    Take care of  yourself.
    Talk soon ?

    Hey Bev,

No my discharge date is 30th November, so will be home for Christmas :)

The image of that is definitely unnerving! *shudders*

Good luck with deciding, if it were me I would weigh up the pro’s and cons of the implant.

    Speak soon my dear! ❤️

    Hi @Ami2301

Awww well that's good, I love Xmas with my family.

    I now have an appointment
For 5th December to see implant co-coordinator.
She's really nice so I'm looking forward to it.

I know the surgeons are going to want me to have another MRI, just to see if they can do it or not?

I will let you know how I get on.
    Talk soon sweetie ?
