Lump sum

Hi, my daughter receives ESA. 2 weeks ago she had a phone call saying that she should have also been getting SDP.  They said she was owed money just over £12,000. This has now been later into her bank account. She knows that you are allowed some savings without any benefits being affected, but, doesn't know how this money will affect her benefits.  Please can anyone out there help as she is not sleeping through worry. Many thanks

Hello and welcome, as your doughter should have been paid this money there will be no effect on her benefits for a period of 52 weeks, she or you may think about advice on how to keep the money safe if not needed, it is a bit of a wind fall as she has managed ok for the last 12 months. Maybe put some into a pension plan. But if placed in a savings or isa account it will be taken as the moneytry allowance and her benefits will be reduced accordingly.
