Aspergers and education

Hi everyone - I have a wonderful son aged 9 who has been diagnosed with aspergers.  His symptoms are mild but as a parent I find myself losing a lot of sleep through worringing.  I'm very concerned because my son will be starting secondary school in 18 months but his writing and spellings is poor and I'm worried it is going to hold him back.  The school have been very good and I've been trying to help at home but there just isn't any improvement.  We are contemplating extra tuition but I'm not sure if this is a good choice or not.  Any help and advice from the community would be appreciated

    Hi @Leisa
Thanks for your post and welcome to our community. I can understand that this is a very worrying time for you and your family. Has your son had a SEN assessment?

Hi Richard, thank you for the welcome and the reply.  Yes my son has had the assessment and the school are very supportive.  He doesn't have a 1:1 but the school are trying different techniques with his learning

    Hi @Leisa
Does he have an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan)?

@Leisa my name is Kate and I am a parent adviser for the scope navigate service.

Can I ask how long ago your son was diagnosed?

The reason I am asking is we have a brand new service for parents of children who have a disability or impairment.

we offer emotional and practical support for the parents- who have children that have been diagnosed in the last 12 months or who are on the pathway to diagnosis.

Here is the link so you can see if this would be of any use to you
