Do you have experience of accessible sport?

Scope are developing a new, accessible sport event and are looking for disabled people to help shape it. We’re recruiting for an accessibility advisory group where disabled and non-disabled experts in the field of accessible sport come together to advise on the accessibility features of the event, to make it as inclusive as possible. If you have experience in inclusive sport, particularly running events, we’d love to hear from you and can compensate you for your time.

    I have played a range of inclusive sports from wheelchair rugby to boccia. I fully understand how sport can not only improve your physical but also mental wellbeing and would love to be involved with this event. If I can be of any help please let me know.

    Hi @Adrian_Scope ,
    I work for Scope on the Navigate programme, I have a Paralympic background dating from 1998 when I was an athlete (Para Ice Hockey) to later as a refereeing Official (Boccia) In London 2012), between these times I was olso employed as a disability sports development officer in Wales and an Inclusive community sports coach in England.  I have held a number of coaching qualifications over the years including in Swimming as I worked as a coach for 6 years in a club that developed disabled swimmers within Paralympic and Special Olympic pathways and also Athletics and Ice Hockey.  I currently hold a Level 2 Head Coach qualification and a Level 3 National referee qualification in Boccia.
    I am a wheelchair user and have participated and competed in accessible/ Inclusive and disability specific sport for over 30 years.  
    I would be extremely happy to feed into this idea and hopefully use some of my sports development experience to help out.  I will contact Heather Wilson as requested.

    Over the last 30 years I have played many sports, some at international level, others for recreation, I have also been involved in able bodied sports as a coach, I am very interested in being involved in this.

    One of the largest barriers for wheelchairs users in sport is the cost of equipment, with specialist chairs costing anywhere from £2,000 upwards

    Where are all the wheelchair friendly sports? I cannot find any sports opportunities in my area. Can someone suggest options I can investigate?

    Hi @April2018mom, you can locate disability spots in your area by finding a sport you wish to get involved in, visiting there website and entering your post code to see where your nearest club is. I know that www.bocciaengland.org.uk,www.rda.org.uk (riding for the disabled association) and most Paralympic sports websites offer a link to local clubs. In the past I have also contacted my local council in order to find adaptive sports opportunities. I hope this helps
