As a cryptic crossword lover, there are of course lots of these (homophones and homonyms) commonly used by crossword compilers.
An example from this morning's Guardian:"Enclosure is not simple (8)"The answer is "COMPOUND" - a compound can be an enclosure or it can refer to compound interest as opposed to simple interest.
Another example:
"Attack a sailor verbally (7)"Answer: ASSAULT (sounds like "A SALT", which is a term for a sailor).For the students of linguistics ( ;-) ), COMPOUND is a homonym - a word that has more than one meaning. ASSAULT is a homophone - a word that is pronounced the same way as a word with a different meaning. "Verbally" in the 2nd example indicates that you are supposed to say it out loud in order to "get it"...
