Info on teaching methods/S&L therapists?

Hi

My youngest (5) has just been diagnosed with moderate ASD and we are expecting an ADHD diagnosis.  The diagnosis was made through the NHS via my GP's referral which happened before she had even started school-so has taken approximately 2 years.  It's great having the ASD diagnosis, in so much as I hopefully have a better chance of getting her an EHCP, but I need to get a better understanding before I know what to look for with regards to support.  Unfortunately her school don't have a great SEN background, not that they are unhelpful, they just don't have the knowledge, so it's a little like the blind leading the blind.

I'm going to a drop in group with other parents which I'm sure will be really helpful, but in the mean time wondered whether anyone had any info on teaching methods/S&L therapists who specialise in this-just so I don't feel like were are doing nothing whilst we wait for the EHCP, find a school that can help etc... if that's what's needed.

Thanks

Hi @desbo and a very warm welcome to the community! I imagine this has been very stressful. Has your child received a diagnosis within the last 12 months?

If so, you could access our Navigate service at Scope.
Navigate is a 6-week programme that puts you in touch with a personal adviser, who will help you to talk about your feelings and concerns.

The service will help you with:
    • organising your thoughts and feelings
    • practical advice and suggestions
    • coping strategies and insights
    • taking positive actions and helping you with emotional wellbeing
