We recently moved to london with our 3 years old daughter having a global development delay, I have couple of question would love to address here if it is ok, I am so afraid about her future and how her life is going to be:
1 Is london a good environment for kids or adults having a disability
2 what and how government offer, is it helpful or enough.
3 what if I died what will happen to here.
4 Are disabled people happy with the service they are getting in london

I would really appreciate each answer
I am new to this and don’t know anyone that can give me information or at least tell me some basic information

Hi, I don't live in London but know a bit about it and basically it is a very big place covered by many different local authorities and health authorities and so there is not a simple answer about services "in London"; it very much depends where you live.  Your local authority area should have some sort of Children's services for disabled children and also there will probably be some sort of disability support organisation (charity) which should have info.  As your daughter is young you should also have access to an NHS Child development services (speech and language, physiotherapy etc) and if you do not already see a paediatrician then ask your GP for a referral.  Also you should speak to the local education authority (it will be the same authority as Childrens social services, but it will be different from the health authority...very confusing I know) about her early years educational needs.

Hi I hope you find the advice above useful, I also have no knowledge of London or the services on offer do not have answers to your questions.

Like suggested I would start with your GP who should signpost you to required services in the community

Hello @sandraelhoueiss and welcome to the online community. Unfortunately I do not know much about the services and support in London, as I work for Scope's Family Services in Leeds.

Your local authority should have a page on their website called The Local Offer, and this usually gives parents and carers information about services and support you can access. Also speak to your Health Visitor and they should be able to find out and help you access local parents support groups and support services you may need.

Scope also have a great service called Navigate https://www.scope.org.uk/family-services/navigate/ and they can provide you with emotional support, which may help you with your question 3 about 'if anything happens to me'.

I hope this helps you with some information and hopefully someone from London may also have some advice for you.

    Hi @sandraelhoueiss

A very warm welcome to both this community and our country.

I worked in the NHS for over 30 odd years and lived near London for a number of years.

    1. Although a capital city, London is very progressive in supporting it’s disabled community.  Googled “Disability Rights UK”, which is a world renowned charity based in London, to gain further insight.

    2. You will need to arrange a needs based assessment for your child, with your local borough, that you reside in.

    3.  In terms of children’s health care and development services, London, has some of the best in the world.  Please take a look at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, as an example.

    4. Once you have registered with a GP surgery, request an assessment of your child by a health visitor (specialist child development nurse). Ask for a copy of the assessment report, from her/him.

Please let us know, if we can be of any further assistance.

    Stay kind and be safe.

    Best wishes
