“Can you have sex?” is not and never will be a flirty, fun or appropriate way to start a conversation.



Online dating is a challenge for everyone. But when you have a disability, it’s not just a good pick-up line you need to worry about. Social stigma, discrimination and intrusive questioning are all just part of trying to find the perfect partner. 

I’m a 19-year-old wheelchair user and I’m here to let you in on what online dating is like with cerebral palsy. 

I’ve had cerebral palsy since I was born, the result of a lack of oxygen during birth. I am unable to walk and I use a wheelchair full time. Cerebral palsy is a condition that develops before, during or after birth due to brain damage that affects movement and coordination. Although the condition isn’t progressive, meaning it won’t worsen over time, having cerebral palsy means that I have to adapt to everyday life due to lack of access and preconceived ideas around disability ― which is why dating can be tricky.

    Very interesting article, I think if the question was put to any body able bodied or a wheelchair user, can you have sex, as an opening line, it would be a quick swipe past.

    Such an interesting article. I think the stereotype and lack of representation is really damaging and leads to these situations. People assume disabled people can't do a lot of things, aren't fun or constantly need help which is so degrading and offensive.

    Really insightful article and really like the end quote :) Personally, I don't believe in online dating and though that isn't necessarily down to my disability, it probably does play a part. Please don't get me wrong, I know couples who have met online but for me it feels unnatural. I'm much more for the old fashioned way, go into a pub one night, it might just change your life. Thank you.
