Hi, I'm wondering if someone could help me? I'm currently receiving universal credit and my sister has asked if I can be my nephews carer and claim carers allowance for him. Will this affect my universal credit and if so do you know how much? Thank you

Hi there and welcome
You can claim the carers element of uc if you meet the criteria and provide care for at least 35 hours per week
Just claim through your journal0 -
Your nephew will need to be claiming PIP or dla for you to be entitled0
-
Hi thank you for replying. He gets dla I've just put my details in a calculator but I don't understand what it's saying? Does this look right?0
-
With that amount it's saying I would get less than I do now? Would I get that amount and carers allowance?0
-
Sorry I'm not familiar with the calculator does it show an increase to what you currently get ?0
-
No its lower by 1300
-
I don't understand the deduction bit for savings and income
Check all the figures against your payment statement to see where the difference is0 -
I think the saving bit is carers allowance deduction0
-
As I don't have savings0
-
If it is you would get carers allowance seperate to uc as a different payment and yes it is then deducted from uc but with both you won't be worse off
I'm not sure how much ca is
Try using the calculator and don't put in carers allowance just the carers element of uc0 -
The carers element came up automatically its so confusing. I think il just give them a call. Thank you for replying. I hope you have a good day xx0

Hello @lindseylou and welcome to the community
I hope the above response has been helpful, I have moved your discussion to our UC category in the hope that you receive further replies from our members.
Again,welcome!1 -
You can claim carers allowance and carers element but the carers allowance will then be deducted from your uc as they are overlapping benefits
You would be better calling welfare rights rather than dwp as dwp are not best on advising they are there to advise on the claim process rather than your entitlements0 -
Right OK thank you il give them a call0
-
You don't need to claim Carers Allowance to get the carer's element of UC.
The deduction in the calculation is for Carer's Allowance. You will either get carers Allowance and UC or just UC. The total amount either way will be, according the calculation you have shown, £1445.36.1 -
Do I need to claim carers allowance to get the carers element? I have just put in my journal I've started caring for my nephew but I haven't claimed for carers allowance? Have I done the right thing?0
-
You can just claim carers element on its own
I think you need to complete the change in circumstances in your journal rather than putting a note in0 -
I did do it as a change in circumstances. Thank you for your help0
-
The carer element would be applied from the start of the assessment period in which you reported the change.0
-
Thank you for your help. It only asked for my nephews name and address and if I care for him for 35 hours or more. Will they be in contact for more details ect?0
