Hi, what benefits would someone on a New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) scheme be entitled to?

I work for mental health recovery and support team in a NHS trust as an Employment Specialist. I have a client who is on the NEA scheme has registered his business as a sole trader and he wants to receive benefits (He is currently on ESA ), for 6 months so he plow money into the business so he can buy tools and equipment. The DWP are confusing him saying he can't have money in his business which are operating cost etc. has anybody got any advise?

Hi @IanJordan. I'm not very familiar with the NEA scheme, or how it might interact with other benefits.

From looking at the gov.uk page, it seems that:

you may get a weekly allowance worth up to £1,274 over 26 weeks
you can apply for a loan to help with start-up costs

If you’re disabled or you have a health condition, You may be able to get extra support through an Access to Work grant.

Could either of these help your client with the initial costs? Has he spoken to his mentor?

Additionally, does your client currently claim PIP?
