Is there anyone I can speak to about my son's post-16 options?
Options
Hi there
I am mother of Sam who is 15, has spastic quadriplegia and goes to a DSP which is within a mainstream school. We are starting to look at his life post 16, and also at what the future might look like beyond that. Is there anyone I can speak to about possible pathways?
The courses at the colleges that I have received information about seem very 'practical', but whilst Sam can understand everything, reading is difficult (though not impossible, but it is hard work for him/slow) and doing anything independently is almost impossible. Has anyone had experience of being in the same boat? His school won't give any advice, so we're feeling a bit lost!

Hi @CSherwin
Welcome!
I am a Careers Adviser on the Career Pathways programme at Scope. We support young people aged 16 - 25 (although we are also piloting working with 15 year olds too) and we would be delighted to help Sam. We offer an initial session and then up to 3 sessions of up to an hour each. What we cover depends entirely on what Sam would like - so we would be delighted to help with post-16 options, CV writing, ideas for future careers and to talk through different options, as well as simply to talk about interests and hobbies and help build confidence. If this is something you think may benefit Sam, please do visit https://www.scope.org.uk/employment-services/career-pathways/ for more information. You can also fill in an online form to refer Sam and set up an initial meeting with either me or my colleague, Gina. No pressure of course and do ask here if I can help with anything too, like the other wonderful people offering their supportKatharine McKnight

Thank you @Richard_Scope and @Katherine_Scope . I wrote my post above and then clearly did nothing about it. Richard... How do I contact you? Camilla

I'm sure @Richard_Scope will pick this up when he's back in @CSherwin, but I'll also leave a note letting him know that you'd be interested in having a chat
How are you and your son getting on?
