do dwp take back their money from award?

in PIP, DLA, ADP & AA
if i receive pip (awaiting mr) will they deduct what i owe them from it? i owe about £600 from a loan from them im paying it back at £27 a week currently it would be great if they took it just want to know if anyones had it happen to them?

    Hi,

    Payments from DWP do tend to go through debt management first to see if any debt needs to be repaid, however it depends on the debt and what debt it is.

    I'm guessing you have a UC budgeting loan, or new claim loan? I have a budgetting loan through UC which I pay back £25 a month through benefits and got my money from PIP without any deductions.

    So I think it depends on the debt and whether you already have a plan in place to pay it back. Others might be able to shine more light than me, but I had a loan and it wasn't paid off by my PIP money backpay.

    Hi thanks for your reply I don’t get universal credit I’m still on the old style benefits where everything  is separate it’s a social fund payment and it’s the only debt I have just thought as it’s dwp they will probably take it back for themselves quicker

    I'm not familiar with legacy benefits so unsure if they will take it or not, but from the sounds of it you want them to take it. I think either way whether they take it or not you will still have the option to pay it back in full when you receive it.
