Hi everyone. I've been with my current employer (local Government) for 10 year's. I'm on my third long term sickness at the moment with various issues, I've been diagnosed with ADHD , MADD I also suffer Dyslexia. About 4 months ago I suffered my 4th heart attack. My question is HR has recommended medical retirement on my referral to OH. my issue is I've never been in the pension scheme due to living on my own and I couldn't afford to pay into it. What would be my options if I did go for medical retirement, I'm 53.

I've spoken to my union but I didn't feel it was much help.

Many Thanks

Hi and welcome to the community

You can only take early or ill health retirement if you are in a pension scheme as you state you have never had a pension this isn't an option

The alternative would be medical dismissal some companies pay a level of compensation for this though it isn't a legal requirement

You would need to look into what benefits you could be entitled to based on your circumstances try a benefits calculator on gov website

    Good morning @janer1967.
Would you have some advice for me please.
I have worked for the same Retail company for 11 years. (I am nearly 63).Last
November (2020) l got really ill and had to have 6 months of work due to ill health. I went back in June this year. But On reduced hours 12 hours a week,  with far less responsibility. Which I am very happy with. I really am not strong enough now to continue doing what I was doing before.its extremely heavy work, fill shelves and moving stock around doing displays and serving customers aswell.
But this year my health seems to be getting worse included hospital aadmissionsI now have Diverticular disease and had 3 quite serious flare ups since end of October.
I have been thinking of Medical retirement but don't know if I can do this. Would my company allow me to do this?
    Regards

    Hi @Anne_2021

I totally understand I worked in retail for 30 years

Are you in a pension scheme?

It's the pension provider that makes a decision about ill health retirement it isn't easy to get as basically you have to evidence you are not able to work in any capacity

With your age it maybe worth looking at early retirement depending on how that would impact your pension

Look into your pension but bead in mind it may not benefit you to do anything about private pension as this could impact any benefits you may be entitled to

I would first of all ask to be referred to oh for a work place assessment they will then make recommendations on future options

Any other questions please let me know

I do have a small works pension I pay into .not paying now as  I don't earn enough. Sounds like it would be paid in lump sum .totals about £5000 .not much  at all. But medical or early retirement  is something I  am thinking seriously about. I do have an appointment with my specialist next week to discuss what treatment I need going forward . I have already written some questions to ask regarding continuing my work. He does already know what work I do.
    Thanyou so much

I would have thought early retirement would be easier option than ill health retirement and also this would enable you to continue to work if your health permits

That amount wouldn't discount you claiming benefits depending on other circumstances obviously

You might want to do a benefits calculator found on gov website to see what you could be entitled to

Are you single or have a partner who works
