A bit confused.

in Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Hi everyone, im hoping someone can answer a question for me, i have been on esa for a couple of years in the support group and i have just been accepted for pip high rate daily living an lower rate mobility, i am wondering will my esa payments change in any way like increase or go down, thanks for any help.

    Which ESA are you claiming, is it New style ESA or the old Income Related or Contributions based? If you claimed after December 2018 then it is likely to be New style ESA which means it's a contributions based only benefit and no disability premiums are payable on this.

    Thanks for that. If you live alone (or classed as living alone) then you will be entitled to the Severe disability Premium, providing no one is going to claim Carers Allowance or Carers element of UC for looking after you.
    If you live with a partner or adult children then they must also be claiming a qualifying disability benefit such as either PIP daily living/DLA mid/high rate care or Attendance Allowance or be registered blind.

    Thanks for the reply poppy, i live with my adult son who is also on high rate daily living pip, i recieved a text off DWP yest saying we have recieved your enquiry about esa and payment will be made on10/01/2022, i didnt make any enquiry though so im guessing it could be to do with my pip decision being made on the 4th of this month.

    The SDP isn't usually automatically paid because of the Criteria. I would advise you to ring them first thing Monday morning to just ask about claiming this. It's a very simple claim that can be done over the phone. It's an extra £67.30 per week in your ESA and can be backdated to the start of your PIP award, if you were eligible at that time.

    If your son also gets income based ESA he is also now eligible for the SDP. Unfortunately if he gets UC there is no equivalent provision.
    Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Rules may be different in other parts of UK.
