Hi everyone, I'm new here. I am the parent of a young adult who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and am looking for some advice. Our son is a full time wheelchair user and has learning difficulties, he needs 24 hour care. I am wondering if anyone out there is in the same situation and lives independently with support in their own property?

Is there anything in particular you're struggling with most at the moment- is it about finding enough support for your son's care?

Interesting question. My son is almost 25, quad athetoid, power chair, communication aid, currently a student and we are looking at the same issues. Finding suitable housing is the biggest issue...and that's in a reasonably large, and no too expensive northern city..

Hi we have a property but are struggling with fire regs as our son wants to live with another wheelchair user and an ambulant friend. I sometimes think things are put in our way for the sake of it. Does anyone else live in a shared house with two wheelchair users. if so how do you manage the fire regulations?

When I first left home I rented a room from a friend she was a wheelchair user like myself. Fire regulations never really came up.

There is an organisation called Habinteg that may be able to advise you on the fire regulations.
