This Sunday, 19 March 2023, we will see mums and mother figures around the UK celebrated for all they are and all they do. What were the special things your maternal figure did that stay in your heart?

Speaking personally, my mum always seemed like wonder woman. A single parent, a carer, a sister, a survivor, a nurse and most of all my one constant. It was her bringing biscuits to my primary school at dinner time, when she realised she’d forgot a chocolate breakaway in my lunchbox. It was the Sunday night big hair wash, as she brushed my long curly hair to get all the ‘lugs’ (knots!) out whilst the radio one top 40 played. It was going with me to hospital appointments, holding my hand, being ‘just outside’ during investigations and promising me, things would get better. Then there’s her singing, quite simply - no one else can butcher Barry White like she can! I appreciate not everyone has a perfect relationship with their mum, and I have been very lucky to have mine.

Over to you

appreciate not everyone has a perfect relationship with their mum, and I have been very lucky to have mine. But do you have a maternal figure? And what were the small things they did that you’ll always remember?

My maternal figure was my grandma, And it sounds silly, but the fact she did nothing and was just there, authentically being herself was so grounding and special to me. It was her presence that helped me feel safe and loved. So I loved just being with her while she pottered around and got on with life. She never felt she had to impress or entertain me and I loved that I just had to slot into her routine

Thank you for sharing this with us @TheSunAlwaysShines. Not silly at all, sometimes 'just there' is the best thing people can do.

As you say, you found this so grounding and special. Also, it made you feel safe and loved which is really important  :)
