What Job Do "you" Do??

I've read a lot of questions regarding employment, rights, skills and abilities. But I think it would be a good idea for people in the forum to say what job "they" do. This will show some of the younger people or people looking for career a change (who have cerebral palsy) what varied jobs they can have and how to go about getting them.

So, I'll start the ball rolling... I'm a Staff Nurse in an Intensive Care Unit at my local hospital.

    Does this count....

I do volunteer work at a centre (Cerebral Palsy Care Centre) helping older folks with everyday things - tolieting, feeding chatting to them etc.

I have cerebral palsy and as much as i volunteer for the centre it is as much of a learning cerve for me as it is for them.

    I do enjoy it

I work as an administrator for the NHS at my local psychiatric hospital. I have been doing this job for 10 years. Prior to that i was a nursing assistant for 12 years. I had to give this up because being on my feet all day was killing me because of my CP. I have spastic diplegia.

Hello, I am headteacher of mainstream primary school with several children attending who have CP. I am really keen to keep them all motivated and enthusiastic about learning and I truly believe they need aspirations to support them in doing this. I would ideally like for our children to meet with adults with CP who are leading happy and fulfilling lives and are in employment of some kind. One of children in particular is becoming increasingly disengaged, his mother and I feel that he is reaching an age where he is feeling pessamistic about his future and we want to help him see that life with CP can be good. So if you are an adult with CP who would like to share you story of success with our children, or better still come and meet them, we would be delighted to hear from you. If anyone knows of any groups who work with schools to support the aspirations of children with CP, we would also appreciate contact details for them too.

Ilook forward to hearing from anyone who can help :)

    Hi all
I'm new to the new site. I'm a counselling student with Cerebral Palsy. I have been working over Summer as an inclusive development worker (helping children with disabilities to play and have fun). I have enjoyed it but have struggled to relax into it due to my own difficulties. I have gotten quite stressed over the manual handling elements, this is not all of the job but is an aspect of it. I'm not sure about it all.

I was interested to read the user who works in an intensive care unit at a hospital as I did an appenticeship a few years ago in an outpatient unit at a hospital (or started one) and was told I was too slow putting exam gloves on, made to feel horrible and ultimately I left.

Just wondering how others get around the feeling different?

Sorry about the double posting but in response to Headteacher - perhaps the KIDS charity might help children in and out of school achieve their aspirations.

I am 36 and work as an engineer developing and manufacturing space and ground based remote sensing equipment including high accuracy miniature mechanical components. The sky is not the limit...., who will be the first person with cp to actually go to space? why not? :-)

Hi - I work for a School as an ICT Technican in Somerset - Have a strong belief that nothing is impossible and you will always find another way of doing something that you find challenging. I was at a disability conference a couple of years ago and a very inspring speaker there was a man called Norman Croucher, his outobiography is called legless but standing. he is an amazing person.

If your school is anywere in the west country I would be very happy to come and share some positive life experiences about living with CP. I was told by doctors that I would never walk, talk, or sit up on my own. let just say doctors don't always get it right!

This is a Great idea. Ive really enjoyed reading how well people are doing. I have a daughter with Spastic Diaplegia CP she goes to mainsteam school and is the only one with CP there. I do believe children with disability or differences need possitive role models like them to look up too. My daughter is Very determined and at times this can prove difficult to deal with especially at school.

Hi. I am fairly new to the site. I have CP but don't know what type. I was born with CP and I am also partially deaf. I am 45 this month and been working for HMRC since I was 20.

I have found that if I walk long distances I have to sit down as my left leg gets tired. I also get the odd spasm which doesn't really affect me.

The thing that I am most concerned about is that in work I find it difficult to adapt to new tasks. In my job I can do several tasks a day or over a week or month. I have a GP appointment today because I would like to see a CP specialist if possible.

I want to know more about my condition, how it could affect me later in life, etc.

Any info or help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

    Thankyou

    Hello ITU?RGN,

I am really interested to know whether you have CP as I too want to be a nurse (mental health branch) and I have secured a place for September at uni. However, I am too scared to disclose my CP in fear that I will not pass the Occupational Health clearance and loose my place.

I previously studied as a nurse in 1999, I'm now 31 and although day-to-day I'm fine, my right hand is getting stiffer and my back does hurt a little more often.

I really hope the NHS sees past my mild CP and allows me to help others improve their health. What do you think?

Oh, and when asked on the application whether I had a disability or not, I said no because I do feel that I can carry out day-to-day tasks and have never received help for my CP since secondary school.

    Thanks.

I've been making publications for charities now for about 7 years. Using my graphic art skills. Recently I decided to go for some more training but found that the education funding I would have had is withdrawn! so I'm trying to get charity funding. I think somehow I will get the money from somewhere but I'm a year behind already because of that. Then again education is not as important as providing people with what they basically need

    thanks for listening

This post is really old, but perhaps there is somebody out there who could get some use from this, but basically I have been working in banks for the last 20 years.

There are times when people do discriminate, but thats life im afraid.

Either way its provided a good living for me and my family!!

    Hello,

I'm Eleni, a Dutch student, studying one semester in the UK. I'm writing an article (for my study journalism) about people with a disability and how they found their (dream) job. I'm looking for someone between 20 en 35 who would like to be interviewed about finding his/her job. The interview only takes ten minutes by telephone, or email if you prefer that. I would really appreciate it if you could help me. You can send an email to 0hoefe10@solent.ac.uk with your name/age/job if you would like to help me.
    Thank you very much!
