Hello @racket and welcome to the community
Sorry to hear that you lost your job last week, how are you feeling about it?This is a very supportive and welcoming site to be a part of so I’m hopeful that you’ll find it to be a positive outlet. Feel free to have a look around and get involved wherever you’d like 😊 I have included below a few of the pages I’d recommend having a look through to get used to things:
- The virtual coffee lounge which is one of our categories, in which we play games and talk about general subjects such as hobbies and interests
- The recent discussions page, which shows an overview of everything happening across the community
- The categories page, which shows a full list of discussion groups on the community
If you have any questions at all then don’t hesitate to ask.

I wasn't happy about my recent dismissal from my current job. I am having to work my notice or I will not get paid. not nice when you know that you are no longer in the loop, and are just killing time before your contract ends. I have however, been proactive and have been looking for work in other schools. I have osteoarthiritis in both hands in my left knee, depression and functional neurological disorder which is an awful disability, which is very dibilitating as it fluctuates.

Hi and welcome to the community
Sorry to hear about your situation and understand working your notice is upsetting
You said if you don't work it you won't get paid? What is it you won't get paid for?
Are there any clauses about going sick in your notice period ? Do you get any sick pay if you went off ?

I finish my notice on the 2nd of august. I work in a school. I must admit I am looking forward to finding a new school to work in that will see that my disabilty shouldn't matter0
-
I hope that you find a school that's more willing to help you be successful in the workplace @racket
If you ever need any support seeking employment, then our friendly employment services are on hand to help.
Are you receiving enough support to help you manage your health conditions, including your depression at the moment?0 -
Not really. Can’t find a job that fits in with my disabilities. I have fnd and it’s so difficult. Tics, verbal and non verbal, weakness in right leg and arm. Now got tinnitus and wear hearing aids. Also other health problems. On meds but that’s it0
-
@racket I'm so sorry you've been finding it so difficult.
I saw from your previous comments that you worked in schools before. Were you a teacher?0 -
No I wasn’t. I was a learning support person for the students in the special educational needs area and I loved it. They won’t take me back, as I cannot fulfill the full time support so they fired me on capability due to my I ll health0
-
no now I have no job and feel useless0
-
Please don't feel useless @racket
Can I ask, with your position, could it be done remotely from home? With the pandemic, I've seen a rise in the number of online schools and classes needed. Or was it more a "hands on" approach to support?0 -
It was working one to one with a student who is now in yr 10. I loved it. Not sure where to go what to do? I’m 52 and can’t afford university or a college course. It would be nice to educate students in mental health but I’ve no degree and only personal experience in that area, also I don’t drive. I’m really at a loss0
-
I did think of that. Maybe someone will rain me up0
-
It might be worth looking into Colleges @racket. Sometimes, there are opportunities to educate students in Colleges without degrees.
However, this differs between different College's - particularly the subject areas you can educate students in and if they provide training on the job or not.
Other than this, have you looked into remote tutoring? Sometimes charities take people without degrees too but again this differs between charities.
There are also many opportunities to be a part-time teaching assistant, different educational settings provide differing hours contracts.
Also, sometimes educational settings offer bank shifts for learning support assistants so as much or as little as you feel able to.
I hope this at least semi-helps! Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or wish to discuss this further0 -
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I never knew any of that stuff you told me about. I’m interested in remote tutoring and maybe wellbeing/mental health counselling for young people etc. any information you can give me would be fantastic0
-
@racket It may be worth enquiring with some mental health charities or organisation to see if they have apprenticeships, so you can work, learn and get a qualification at the end0

Sorry, I have come to this far to late; @racket it looks like you poste this 6months ago.
However, I was looking at legal reasons for dismissal.
Capability' is a potentially fair reason for dismissal. To be deemed fair by a tribunal, an employer needs to show that a decision to dismiss was reasonable in the circumstances, and that it was taken after following a reasonable, established procedure.
I am hoping that you boss did assess you properly & independently, and made reasonable adjustments? It is not easy to sack people these days..............0
