My consultant has refused to fill out a BASRIS form stating I am not ill enough yet.
I have IPF (pulmonary fibrosis)
My condition is Terminal, progressive and no medication will cure.
as my condition is terminal should my consultant not have filled out the BASRIS as soon as my condition was diagnosed.
any help with this process would very much appreciated0 -

Hi @GerryO - I'm sorry to read about your health problems. As you probably know completing the BASRIS form is up to a clinician's judgement, so in a way it's good that they don't consider it's currently needed.Looking here https://socialsecurity.gov.scot/guidance-resources/guidance/special-rules-for-terminal-illness-frequently-asked-questions , it says:'[you] can also ask for a second opinion from a relevant doctor or nurse who is able to sign the BASRiS form. The Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities required by the Patient Rights (Scotland) Act 2011 says, “You can ask for a second opinion before you make a decision about your care and treatment, if you think you need it. Where possible, your request will be met''

Hello @GerryO
Apologies as I didn't see your reply before I asked if you were well. I am so sorry to hear about your condition being terminal. I see Chiarieds has been able to advise on the BASRIS Form. I hope it helps answer your query. Can I ask, do you have support around you?0 -
Hi Chiarieds,
This is a nightmare guidance.
it has you thinking from the onset that if your condition is a progressive, Terminal, no cure and is the thing that is more likely to cause your death then the BASRIS form should be completed.
My consultant has said my lungs are at 50% capacity and I have been put on steroids to try and slow the progression.
He also stated there will be no improvement to my condition.
I have asked if he could supply me with the sections he used on the guidance that supports his decision.
I have not received anything from him after repeated requests.

Please don't apologise. It was me not seeing your post before I responded. I hope the community can be a place of support for you!
Glad to hear you are well today, I hope the weather is nice where you are?1 -
Is there anything that might help at the moment @GerryO? Other than your consultant providing you with the relevant sections, of course. You have every right to do a freedom of information request - have you contacted the main admin or escalated this to a complaint yet? Please don't hesitate to let us know if there is anything else we can do to help0
