Bedroom Tax

Our son is moving out of the family home soon. This will mean we have a spare bedroom.
My husband has been sleeping downstairs for a few years now as my sleep issues and pain keep me awake, as well as his loud snoring. Between waking him up, to stop the snoring, my tossing and turning and constant trips to the toilet, he would be tired all day. However with a 'spare' room, he could have his own space rather than a sofa.
Does anyone know the process for applying for exemption for bedroom tax, and what is the likelihood of being accepted as exempt?

    The bedroom tax only applies to those living in social housing. If this is you then you maybe able to claim for an extra bedroom because you're unable to share with your partner.     If it's housing benefit you're claiming then you'll need to apply through your local Authority. If it's Universal Credit then you'll need to apply through your journal.

    We live in Social Housing and receive Housing Benefit.

    Then you'll need to contact your LA once your son leaves home. As i advised, the extra bedroom isn't guaranteed.

    No,  we realised it is not guaranteed, but as we will still be needing 4 bedrooms we want to try.
    Our council has put in a wet room and stairlift, and since 3 of us are disabled with various needs, downsizing would not be easy.
